Problems solved by technology

As disclosed above, although IEEE TSN can be used in Ethernet to schedule traffic with different priorities, however, TSN cannot be directly applied in wireless networks
Slotted protocols such as those proposed in IEEE802.15.4e are commonly used to regulate channel access and avoid collisions, but they lack flexibility in handling the different traffic priorities offered by TSN

Abstract

A mechanism for channel access in industrial wireless networks is provided. A method includes allocating, by a network controller, time / frequency resource units in a set of guaranteed time slots to packet transceivers in an industrial wireless network. Guaranteed slots are divided in time into slots and in frequency into channels, where a slot-channel pair defines a time / frequency resource unit. The method includes providing, by the network controller, information about time / frequency resource units allocated to the packet transceivers to the packet transceivers. The method includes mapping, by the packet transceivers, packets of their own traffic flows to time / frequency resource units allocated to them in each set of guaranteed time slots. Each packet transceiver's packets are mapped according to its own traffic flow priority-based scheduling and independently of any mapping of packets of other packet transceivers in the industrial wireless network.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments presented herein relate to methods, network controllers, packet transceivers, computer readable storage media for channel access in industrial wireless networks. Background technique [0002] Industrial communication systems are commonly used in grid control applications (for example, for substation automation) for device control and monitoring. Therefore, these communication systems must accommodate different types of traffic from information technology (IT) infrastructure (eg, remote monitoring equipment, metering equipment, etc.) as well as from operational technology (OT) infrastructure (eg, control systems). Different business flows have different specific requirements in terms of determinism, delay and reliability, which should be considered when designing the protocol stack, especially the Media Access Control (MAC) layer in the protocol stack. [0003] In this regard, the IEEE Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) Working Group is develo...
