[0066] In aerosol-generating systems that generate an aerosol for inhalation by a user by heating an aerosol-forming substrate, there are generally two different types of heating control. The most common type of heating control for liquid aerosol-forming substrates is so-called "flash" heating, in which a quantity of liquid is heated rapidly for a short period of time to generate vapor. The flash heating may be timed to coincide with the timing of the user's puff or inhalation such that the aerosol is only generated during the user's puff. Flash heating is also used to vaporize aerosols to form films or coatings on substrates. Another type of heating control is so-called "continuous" heating, wherein the aerosol-forming substrate is heated for a sustained period of time independent of the user's puff or inhalation. This type of heating control is more common when heating a larger mass of solid aerosol-forming substrate, such as a tobacco rod.
