Problems solved by technology

The second effect is that improvements to objects on the web content server are detected by the date of the last update
As a result, objects can be sent uselessly to web proxy cache servers

Embodiment Construction

[0057] Figure 1 illustrates the environment of the present invention. A web content server (100, 101, 102) provides information services to client devices (110, 120) over a network (130), which may be the Internet and may include mobile communications. An Internet client device (110, 120) uses a web browser to request a request to a web content server for accessing content that can be, for example, an HTML page or an image file (JPG, GIF, etc.) or image file (JPG, GIF, etc.) or Information about any type of object such as audio files (WAV, MP3, etc.). The request is not sent directly to the web content server but to the web proxy cache server (140). The web proxy cache server intermediary between the client device and the web content server receives requests from the client device, requests missing information or requests refreshed information from the web content server and transmits the requested information to the client. In fact, web proxy cache servers, first used for s...

Abstract

A method and computing systems for refreshing objects stored by a Proxy cache server from Web content servers. The refresh is requested by the Proxy cache server only if the expiration date attached to a stored object has expired. The refresh of one object is requested by the Proxy cache server to the Web content server upon a request from the browser of a client device. Additionally, the Proxy cache server can send a Refresh_request command to the Web content servers applying to a list of objects for which the expiration date has expired. The refreshed objects are not sent by the Web content server if the last modified date has changed but rather if, and only if, the object content, identified by a signature, has been changed. This method and system have the advantage of offloading the computing resources involved for data transfer through the network connecting the servers.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to web servers and, more particularly, to web proxy cache servers that store web objects in their secondary storage and refresh with new web objects via a web content server. Background technique [0002] The World Wide Web provides users with access to millions of documents on thousands of World Wide Web content servers. Access to these documents is performed through a web browser running on the client device. Web browsers provide users with a simple look and feel. Behind this simple user observation, a large amount of infrastructure is configured to allow access to any document residing on a web content server. Responses to user requests can take a long time, especially if the Web content server is remote from the requester's site and connected through a low-performance network link or is heavily loaded. The requested information is passed across the network with each request, which requires high network per...
