Abstract

In the projector 10, a projecting lens 11 and an illuminating optical system 15 are horizontally arranged in a line. A luminous flux emitted from an illuminating lamp 14 enters a cross dichroic prism (XDP) 13 via the illuminating optical system 15, and is separated into luminous fluxes of respective colors. The separate luminous fluxes of the respective colors enter corresponding liquid crystal panels 12R to 12B and re-enter the XDP 13 after the addition of image information to the respective luminous fluxes, and, thereby, they are composed. The XDP 13 can be miniaturized by disposing the intersection lines of dichroic films so as to be perpendicular to the short sides of a rectangular liquid crystal image face 12a. The intersection lines are disposed parallel to a horizontal direction when the projector is installed.
