Embodiment Construction

[0020] FIG. 1a shows a disc-shaped record carrier 11 having tracks 19 and a central hole 10 . The tracks 19 are arranged on the information layer according to a rotating helical pattern constituting substantially parallel tracks. The record carrier is optically readable, called an optical disc, and is of the read-only type. The information is represented on the information layer by optically detectable marks along the track, eg grooves produced by embossing. The track includes location information, such as addresses, to indicate the location of the data blocks. Several blocks constitute an information unit, to which an error correction code is provided, which is the minimum amount of data required for the error correction process in the reading device.

[0021] Figure 1b is a cross-section taken along line b-b of the record carrier 11 in which a reflective layer 16 and a protective layer 17 are provided for a transparent substrate. The tracks 14 may be implemented as groove...

Abstract

A record carrier of a read-only type has information in a track. The information is subdivided in addressable blocks and a number of blocks constitute an information unit. The information unit is the minimal unit for error correction according to a format for writable record carriers. On the read-only record carrier a linking area is provided between information units. This has the advantage that compatibility with recordable record carriers is improved.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a record carrier of the read-only type comprising information in a track. [0002] The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a record carrier of the read-only type, in which method the information layer of the record carrier is provided with information-representing marks constituting a track. [0003] The invention also relates to a reading device for reading the record carrier. Background technique [0004] Record carriers of the read-only type are well known, eg compact discs (CD). Record carriers of this read-only type are manufactured in mass production methods, for example by pressing duplicate optical record carriers from a master disc. Thus, information is added to the record carrier in one step, the track being a single continuous pattern of marks representing said information. This information is logically subdivided into blocks of addressable data words and corresponding control words, eg addresses. ...
