Recording method and apparatus, optical disk, and computer-readable storage medium

A recording apparatus records movie content onto a DVD. The movie content is encrypted using a different encryption method depending on whether the DVD is intended for consumer use or industrial use. If the DVD is for consumer use, a VIDEO_TS directory is created on the DVD, and the encrypted movie content is recorded in the VIDEO_TS directory. If the DVD is for industrial use, a VIDEO_TS directory and an EWCPS_TS directory are created on the DVD, and the encrypted movie content and message data are recorded respectively in the EWCPS_TS directory and the VIDEO_TS directory. The message data indicates that the movie content cannot be played back by consumer DVD players.

Disc recording medium, recording method, disc drive device

It is an object of the present invention to improve reliability of defect management. By providing a plurality of management data areas each including a defect management area typically in a lead-in zone of a disc inner-side region enclosed by a circumference having a predetermined radius on a disc-shaped recording medium, reliability of the defect management can be obtained. In addition, by placing a plurality of the defect management areas (information areas Info1 and Info2) at locations, which are separated from each other in the radial direction of the disc-shaped recording medium, sandwiching a recording / reproduction condition adjustment area OPC having a relatively large size, the reliability of the defect management areas can be further improved. Furthermore, by providing each of the defect management areas with a plurality of recording areas, which include a currently used recording area for recording defect management information and spare recording areas each usable as a substitute for the currently used recording area, the currently used recording area can be replaced with one of the spare recording areas in accordance with an update count of the currently used recording area or error status of this currently used recording area.

Multimedia optical disk, reproduction apparatus and method for achieving variable scene development based on interactive control

A multimedia optical disk is provided. The multimedia optical disk includes a data area for storing objects which include moving picture data and at least one of audio data and sub-picture data. The multimedia optical disk also includes an index area for storing reproduction orders of the objects. Route information in the index area includes a sequence of addresses of objects whose alignment represents a reproduction order. Chain control information in the index area corresponds to the route information. The chain control information, being effective in reproducing objects specified by the alignment of the sequence of addresses (objects specified by the alignment of the sequence of addresses are called a chain), instructs the reproduction apparatus to have a navigation control of the chain. A piece of moving picture data having a certain time period is reproduced at the same timing as a piece of audio data and a piece of sub-picture data. A piece of sub-control information, being effective in reproducing moving picture data, sub-picture data, and audio data stored in a small unit instructs the reproduction apparatus to have a navigation control of the data stored in the same small unit.

Recording medium, recording device, reproduction device, recording method, and reproduction method

A recording medium that is a write-once recording medium with data rewritability, thereby increasing the usability of the write-once recording medium, is provided. In a write-once recording medium, a main data area has a normal record and playback sub-area (a user data section), a rewriting replacement sub-area (an OSA), and a replacement management sub-area (an ISA). In response to a request to write data to an address at which data has been recorded, the rewritten data is recorded in the rewriting replacement sub-area (the OSA), and replacement management information that associates the original address with the address in the rewriting replacement sub-area is recorded into the replacement management sub-area (the ISA). Thus, data rewriting is achieved. Accordingly, a write-once recording medium can be substantially used as a data rewritable recording medium.

Method for recording on optical recording medium and apparatus using the same

A method and apparatus for recording on an optical recording medium, including the recording of management information, are described as a standard for the write-once Blu-ray disc. The management information is recorded in a management area of the disc, such as a temporary defect management area (TDMA), and includes record status information and update information. The record status information is a space bitmap (SBM) indicating whether a recording operation has been performed for a predetermined area of the disc, and the update information is SBM update information indicating whether the record status information is to be continuously managed. The SBM update information controls the state of an SBM-on / off function for each of a plurality of recording areas and may be in the form of either start position information and length information corresponding to the respective areas or an SBM update flag. The SBM update information is recorded in the TDMA and is stored in a memory of an optical disc recording / reproducing device for use during recording and reproducing operations. At the time of recording in the predetermined area, an SBM-on state enables a logical overwriting operation to be performed as necessary.

Speech manipulation for continuous speech playback over a packet network

In a speech communications network, continuous play of audio packets is achieved using a jitter buffer in a receiver. Audio packets are stored in the jitter buffer before decoding the audio packets into an audible output. When the level of stored audio packets approaches the full capacity of the jitter buffer, the rate at which the audio packets are played out of the jitter buffer is increased signaling a compression operation in the decoder. When the level of stored audio packets approaches an empty level of the jitter buffer, the rate which the audio packets are played out of the jitter buffer is reduced signaling an expansion operation in the decoder. Audio packets are not modified when the level of stored audio packets is within a predetermined range. A speed controller is provided to instruct the decoder to decode the audio packets according to either a compressed, expanded or normal audio packet status.

Optical disc having variable spare area rates and method for variably setting the rate of spare areas in the optical disc

In a method for setting variable areas of an opical disc which variably sets spare area rates of a prescribed quantity provided for preparing a liably-occurring recording error due to a defect of the optical disc having the variable spare areas, the total quantity of the spare areas installed to the optical disc may be the same as the prescribed quantity. Also, the size rates of the spare areas are variably set in the radius direction by centering about a center portion of the optical disc. Particularly, the more spare area rates are given to the inner circumferential portion and outer circumferential portion, and the less spare area rates are given to the center portion which is relatively stable portion, thereby minimizing the defect occurring rate to decrease the number of defective discs.

Recordable optical disk and optical disk recording device utilizing pre-recorded recording speed information

Information indicative of disk-applicable recording speeds is incorporated in lead-out start time information within ATIP information that is recorded in pre-grooves located in a lead-in area of an optical disk. Once the optical disk is inserted in an optical disk recording device, the lead-out start time information is read out, so that recording is performed on the optical disk after a recording speed is automatically set to a highest settable speed value within a range specified by the read-out lead-out start time information. This arrangement can reliably prevent recording at speeds beyond predetermined limit values unique to the optical disk.
