System and method for packing multi-touch gestures onto a hand

A multi-touch system is disclosed that compares finger arrangements at the beginning of multi-touch gestures and discriminates between neutral- and spread-hand performances. Gestures by the neutral- and spread-hand versions of each chord are then mapped to separate, but intuitively related cursor functions or sets of commands. Less-frequently performed functions and commands are typically assigned to the spread-hand chord, since spreading the hand from neutral takes deliberate effort. With these neutral and spread distinctions, a two-handed gesture set can be packed into a one-handed touch surface, or for two-handed touch surfaces, twice as many intuitively customizable gesture command sets can be accomodated.

Non-volatile memory and method with reduced neighboring field errors

A memory device and a method thereof allow programming and sensing a plurality of memory cells in parallel in order to minimize errors caused by coupling from fields of neighboring cells and to improve performance. The memory device and method have the plurality of memory cells linked by the same word line and a read / write circuit is coupled to each memory cells in a contiguous manner. Thus, a memory cell and its neighbors are programmed together and the field environment for each memory cell relative to its neighbors during programming and subsequent reading is less varying. This improves performance and reduces errors caused by coupling from fields of neighboring cells, as compared to conventional architectures and methods in which cells on even columns are programmed independently of cells in odd columns.

Controls for an optical scanner, such as a single fiber scanning endoscope (SFSE) that includes a resonating optical fiber and a single photodetector to produce large field of view, high-resolution images. A nonlinear control scheme with feedback linearization is employed in one type of control to accurately produce a desired scan. Open loop and closed loops controllers are applied to the nonlinear optical scanner of the SFSE. A closed loop control (no model) uses either phase locked loop and PID controllers, or a dual-phase lock-in amplifier and two PIDs for each axis controlled. Other forms of the control that employ a model use a frequency space tracking control, an error space tracking control, feedback linearizing controls, an adaptive control, and a sliding mode control.

Language input architecture for converting one text form to another text form with tolerance to spelling, typographical, and conversion errors

A language input architecture converts input strings of phonetic text to an output string of language text. The language input architecture has a search engine, one or more typing models, a language model, and one or more lexicons for different languages. The typing model is configured to generate a list of probable typing candidates that may be substituted for the input string based on probabilities of how likely each of the candidate strings was incorrectly entered as the input string. The language model provides probable conversion strings for each of the typing candidates based on probabilities of how likely a probable conversion output string represents the candidate string. The search engine combines the probabilities of the typing and language models to find the most probable conversion string that represents a converted form of the input string.

Non-volatile memory and method with reduced source line bias errors

Source line bias is an error introduced by a non-zero resistance in the ground loop of the read / write circuits. During sensing the control gate voltage of a memory cell is erroneously biased by a voltage drop across the resistance. This error is minimized when the current flowing though the ground loop is reduced. A method for reducing source line bias is accomplished by read / write circuits with features and techniques for multi-pass sensing. When a page of memory cells are being sensed in parallel, each pass helps to identify and shut down the memory cells with conduction current higher than a given demarcation current value. In this way, sensing in subsequent passes will be less affected by source line bias since the total amount of current flow is significantly reduced by eliminating contributions from the higher current cells.

System and method for predicting building thermal loads

A system for forecasting predicted thermal loads for a building comprises a thermal condition forecaster for forecasting weather conditions to be compensated by a building environmental control system and a thermal load predictor for modeling building environmental management system components to generate a predicted thermal load for a building for maintaining a set of environmental conditions. The thermal load predictor of the present invention is a neural network and, preferably, the neural network is a recurrent neural network that generates the predicted thermal load from short-term data. The recurrent neural network is trained by inputting building thermal mass data and building occupancy data for actual weather conditions and comparing the predicted thermal load generated by the recurrent neural network to the actual thermal load measured at the building. Training error is attributed to weights of the neurons processing the building thermal mass data and building occupancy data. Iteratively adjusting these weights to minimize the error optimizes the design of the recurrent neural network for these non-weather inputs.

Tilt-compensated laser rangefinder

The present invention is a laser ranging device that incorporates an internal tilt sensor, an internal temperature sensor, and an internal pressure sensor. The tilt sensor is used to measure the target's vertical angle relative to the horizontal reference plane. Digital signal processing circuitry controls the firing of the laser pulse, calculation of time-of-flight range, measurement of the vertical angle of the tilt sensor, measurement of ambient temperature and storage of tilt sensor and temperature sensor calibration data. The digital signal processing circuitry then provides the user temperature corrected ballistic ranging information, including horizontal range. Additionally, an automatic gain control system minimizes the effects of target to target variance in reflectivity and its associated errors. It is also an object of this invention to electronically minimize errors in the measurement of a vertical angle caused by housing vibration and by temperature variance errors.

Methods and apparatus for reducing signal degradation

A single frequency relay station receives a signal from a master station, and retransmits it. Before retransmitting the signal, the relay station uses a digital filter to subtract from the signal components which arise from multipath interference and coupling interference. The coefficients used by the digital filter are derived from characteristics of the multipath interference and the overall transfer function of the relay station. These are derived by turning off the retransmission, so that the multipath interference can be estimated from the received signal, and commencing the retransmission again, to determine the transfer function. A simplified inverse fast Fourier transform is used to simplify the calculations.
