Problems solved by technology

[0026] 5. PLA cost: PLA can be a very expensive item for the installer, typically $400 or more for a set of two
[0027] 6. PLA Crosstalk: Also, as LAN verification moves to frequencies above 250MHz, the performance of the PLA as part of the measurement system becomes more important
[0029] 7. PLA Datum Calibration: The last issue related to permanent link adapters is measuring datum position
[0039] From the previous discussion, permanent link measurements require the use of a separate set of permanent link adapters when compared to channel link adapters, which adds an undesirable set of costs in terms of: 1) Permanent link the adapter itself; 2) the number of dedicated PLA groups; and 3) the limited PLA test life due to patch cord deflection failure

Embodiment Construction

[0075] exist Figure 9 A schematic representation of the LAN test system of the present invention is shown in . The test system includes a handheld display unit 10 , a handheld remote unit 12 and first and second patch cords 14 and 16 . Each patch cord includes a first plug 14A, 16A at one end, an actual cable 14B, 16B, and a second plug 14C, 16C at the other end. The display unit 10 has a channel link adapter board 18 on which a first connector receptacle 20 is provided. The jack is exposed outside the display unit. Receptacle 20 may receive plug 14A or 16A of a patch cord for forming a first mating connector pair. When diagnosing the link, the other plugs 14C, 16C of the patch cord mate with the wall jack 22 attached to the link 24 that runs inside the wall. The remote unit 14 similarly has a channel link adapter board 26 on which a second connector receptacle 28 is disposed. Both connectors 20 and 28 are preferably right-angle connectors with appropriate pair-to-pair i...

Abstract

The present invention provides a LAN tester having a display unit and a remote unit, each unit having a connector receptacle attached to an adapter board for connection to a plug of a patch cord. Both the display unit and the remote unit have circuitry capable of measuring the phase between the drive signal power source and the corresponding coupled or reflected signal resulting from the drive signal. Scatter parameters are measured for mated connector pairs and the patch cord itself during field calibration. A computer in one or both tester units stores the measured scatter parameters and uses the scatter parameters to move the datum to any desired location along the patch cord. The length of a patch cord can be determined by using phase by measuring the frequency difference between adjacent maxima in the input impedance vs. frequency curve.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 432,858, filed December 12, 2002, and US Application No. 10 / 317,555, filed December 12, 2002. Background technique [0003] Local Area Network (LAN) cabling is used to connect devices such as personal computers, printers, and facsimile machines that use high-speed digital signals to transfer information between them. This type of high performance cabling is sometimes referred to as telecommunications cabling. Because the office has many computers, computer file servers, printers and fax machines, LAN cable lines interconnect all these devices into a communication network. LAN cabling has been designed to support telecommunications between all the individual elements of the network. [0004] figure 1 An example of a LAN cable run is shown in a simplified diagram. figure 1 It is shown how a LAN cable run is used to connect a personal computer ...
