The method comprises the following steps: receiving MAC address recycling information carrying marks of apparatuses at two ends of a fault link; judging whether the device is an NPE terminal apparatus in the apparatuses at two ends of the fault link or not, if so, deleting the MAC address using the fault link asan interface in an MAC address retransmission table according to the mark, and otherwise, deleting the MAC address using the link connected with the NPE apparatus in the apparatuses at two ends of the fault link as the interface according to the symbol. Then method and the device enable the VPLS network to generate a link active-standby changeover; in the process of recycling the MAC address, thequantity of the MAC address needed to be deleted by the NPE is greatly reduced, thereby the processing loads of the NPE apparatus is reduced, and the speed of updating the MAC address is improved.
