Embodiment Construction

[0018] figure 1 is a block diagram schematically showing the general design of the fail-safe lighting system 1 according to the invention. The system 1 includes a light unit 20 and an alarm unit 30 . Depending on the application, the alarm unit 30 may be housed in the same housing as the light unit 20, but the alarm unit 30 may be located remotely from the light unit 20, as shown.

[0019] The lamp unit 20 includes at least one lamp L. As shown in FIG. Although the principles of the invention can also be applied in the case of lamps L of the incandescent type, the invention is mainly intended for lamps L realized by one or more LEDs, as shown in the figures.

[0020] The power supply for the lamp L is indicated by reference numeral 10 . The power supply has output terminals 11, 12 for supplying a DC bus voltage Ub. The lamp unit 20 has power input terminals 21 , 22 coupled to the power supply output terminals 11 , 12 . The light L can be turned on / off by a switch in one o...

Abstract

A failsafe lighting system (1) comprises a lamp (L) and monitoring circuitry for monitoring the correct functioning of the lamp (L), the monitoring circuitry comprising an optical sensor (26) positioned for receiving light generated by the lamp (L). The monitoring circuitry comprises a self-oscillating loop (25) which includes the lamp (L) and the optical sensor (26), wherein the optical path between the lamp (L) and the optical sensor (26) is an essential portion of the loop (25) such that the loop (25) can only oscillate if the optical sensor (26) receives sufficient light from the lamp (L).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to lighting devices for emitting light. The present invention relates in particular to safety lights and warning lights. Background technique [0002] In the following, the wording "lamp" will be used as a short wording for indicating a device capable of emitting light when sufficient electric power is received. The lamp will have electrical terminals for connection to a power source. Note however that the lamp may actually comprise one or more light generating elements connected in series and / or parallel to the terminal, and a typical example is a lamp with multiple LED elements. [0003] A variety of situations in which it is desirable to monitor the operation of a lamp can be envisioned. This need not apply to the case where a lamp is used for lighting: if the lamp is defective, the user will notice that there is no light in situations where he would like the lamp to be on. Said wish applies in particular ...
