Automated control systems and methods for lighting systems are described herein. In certain embodiments, the control systems include either an improved dimmable ballast, an improved dimmer circuit, or both. The control systems are suitable for various applications including a light harvesting system and a security lighting system.

A concealed safety light is described where the light source is integrated and mounted into a switch or power outlet wiring device form factor (20,21,22) to replace conventional electric wiring devices. The light source (10) is controlled by a power and control circuit (90, 790) that derives power from the primary power supply or an alternate power supply. The circuit can detect light levels and turn on the light source when it is dark and also detect power failures to turn on the safety light in the event of a power failure using the alternate power supply The safety light is also capable of responding to an alarm condition from other systems. The resulting safety light is conceyaled in a standard wiring junction box and trimmed with a wall cover plate in the same way as conventional electric wiring devices, allowing it to be concealed while in plain view and provide safety lighting in a variety of ways including power failure, night light and alarm conditions.

A light source along the mirror mounting arm of a school bus or other passenger vehicle to reduce the risk of people or other objects being injured by the school bus. The light source may be mounted directly on the mirror mounting arm or embedded within a mirror mount. The light source may be focused downward to illuminate the ground and may provide vehicle status information and guiding information. Additionally the light source may sweep the ground back and forth or be directed under the control of the driver. The light source may be activated automatically when movement is detected near the vehicle.

An illuminated display that is susceptible to interruption or termination of active lighting capability and provides passive lighting capability in such circumstances. The illuminated display features an active illumination source providing active lighting capability and a display member (i) arranged in light-receiving relationship to the active illumination source and (ii) containing photoluminescent pigment incorporated therein in sufficient amount and distribution to illuminate the display during the interruption or termination of active lighting capability, to provide passive lighting capability. The illuminated display may further include a fluorescent pigment arranged in photoluminescent light-receiving relationship to the display member containing the photoluminescent pigment, whereby the fluorescent pigment down-converts photoluminescent light from the display member during the interruption or termination of active lighting capability.

A self-contained battery powered high visibility safety lighting system is integrated within portions of a vehicle or article's frame, such as a handlebar or body assembly of a motorcycle, bicycle, scooter or toy cycle, stroller, wheel chair, baby carriage, cane or ski pole. The system comprises at least one illumination segment having at least one light source located therein. The light source may comprise a plurality of light emitting diodes integrated within a plurality of apertures located within each of the illumination segments. In another embodiment the illumination segments may be composed of a transparent material to yield transparent illumination segments with an inlay cavity therein for accommodating an electroluminescent light strip. Light may further be emitted from illuminated streamers located on the handlebar grips. Multifaceted emission of light from illumination segments integrated within the frame of the vehicle is highly visible from virtually all directions. An omnidirectional light-alert increases safety for drivers and others in the vehicle's vicinity.

The present invention transforms existing electrical wall outlets into an emergency lighting system for homes, hospitals, hotels, nursing homes and businesses. The lighting device, designed as a replacement electrical wall outlet or receptacle, simply plugs into an existing dual outlet after removal of its faceplate. The lighting device continues to function as an electrical outlet, however, also comprises a local power source such as a constant charge lithium ion battery; a motion sensor for initiating a low level of lighting for darkened room or corridor transit; a power sensor for activating a high level of light when electrical service is disrupted, thereby broadcasting a wash of light over an otherwise darkened room or corridor; and a photoelectric cell which detects daylight or otherwise provided lighting of the room or corridor and thereby prevent unnecessary power usage.

A vehicle safety lighting and signaling system includes a transmitting unit and multiple remote receiving units, each having a lighting and audible element, and that receive signals from the transmitting unit and selectively activates its signaling elements according to a predetermined signal response directed by the transmitting unit. The receiving unit includes a central processor that selectively decodes transmitted signals received from the transmitting unit and provides signals to a driver circuit that activate a visual signal, and audible signal, or both. A receiving unit may have an integral base affixed to an adjustable band, clothing or motorcycle, and that receiving unit is detachable from the base for charging and/or programming. The remote receiving units may include a band that is expandable for positioning about a cycle riders' arm or leg, and includes one or more lighting elements responsive to receiving a predetermined signal.

A dual LED and incandescent security lighting system uses a hybrid approach to LED illumination. It combines an ambient LED illuminator with a standard incandescent lamp on a motion control sensor. The LED illuminator will activate with the onset of darkness (daylight control) and typically remain on during the course of the night (“always on”). The LED illumination, typically amber, is sufficient to provide low to moderate level lighting coverage to the wall and ground area adjacent to and under the fixture. The incandescent lamp is integrated with a motion control circuit and sensor. When movement in the field of view is detected (after darkness), the incandescent lamp is switched on, providing an increased level of illumination to the area. Instead of an “always on” LED illuminator, the LEDs may also be switched off when the incandescent lamp is switched on.

A photocontrol controls the activation of lighting based on ambient light and the time of day using a radio-controlled timer. Radio signals from a particular source of correct time, such as the National Institute for Science and Technology's WWVB radio broadcast, carry encoded time information that can be decoded by the photocontrol to ascertain the current time on start up and periodically during operation. The correct date and time information is used to synchronize the photocontrol's internal clock so that it can turn the lighting load off or on at specific times of the day in accordance with the user's needs. Thus area, business signage, and security lighting, for example, can be turned off late at night and then back on early in the morning to reduce energy consumption by the lighting during those hours when the lighting is not needed.

A multi-functional, multi-directional wearable safety lighting device is disclosed herein that includes a main light housing and a magnetic mounting assembly coupleable to a bottom surface of the main light housing. The mounting assembly is configured to secure the wearable safety lighting device to a user. The main light housing includes warning light elements coupled front and rear side surfaces. A directional work light is coupled to the front side surface of the main housing and is distinct from the warning light elements. A power source supplies power to the warning light elements and the work light. A controller is programmed to energize the warning light elements in select subgroups following depression of a first control button or a second control button, and energize the directional work light following depression of a third control button.

A lighting strip along the side of a schoolbus or other passenger vehicle between a door near the front of the schoolbus and the back side of the schoolbus to reduce the risk of people or other objects being injured by the schoolbus. The lighting strip may be focused downward to illuminate the ground and may provide vehicle status information and guiding information. Lighting strips may be provided on both sides of the schoolbus, and may also be provided on the back side of the schoolbus and on mirrors or mirror arms. Further, the lighting strips may be provided on the underside of the schoolbus along the passenger side. One or more floodlights may be provided on the roof or near the top of the schoolbus along the side with the door. An expandable crossing gate on the driver's side of the exterior wall is also provided.

A coaxial illuminated laser endoscopic probe and active numerical aperture control apparatus and method of use, succinctly known as an illumination and laser source, capable of selectively providing illumination light and laser treatment light through a single optical fiber. The apparatus and method is especially useful during ophthalmic surgery. The present art is capable of providing the aforesaid through an optical fiber of such small size that heretofore said fiber was only useable for laser treatment light only. The present art also, with its unique optical system, allows for two illumination light outputs from a single illumination source. The apparatus utilizes a phototoxicity risk card to calibrate the system to prior art or safe illumination levels since the unique optical system provides illumination light of greater intensity than the prior art.

A kayak paddle safety lighting system incorporated into a kayak paddle that may serve as a set of illumination or running lights more effective than current deck mounted running lights. The lighting system includes an operational switch located in the handle of the paddle, LEDs located in the paddles are preferably illuminated by activation of the switch and an included battery. In its preferred embodiment, the system includes a microcontroller which is programmed with a plurality of different operational lighting modes including steady dim and bright, intermittent flashing and distress signals as flashing the S.O.S. code. In a further preferred embodiment the components in the system are wireless, with the electrical communication being by means of an rf signal.

The invention relates to a no-reflection high-efficient-luminescence unitary-WLED power-capacity-expansion high-power light source. A plurality of blue-light BLED chips are welded on a radiating base plate. The surfaces of the BLED chips are coated with silica gel phosphor powder, which forms white-light WLED illuminants. The high-light-transmittance and high-intensity industrial plastic PC is made into a thin isopachous hemisphere-shaped casing. The PC casing is filled with high-transparency silicon gel which has the same light transmittance as the PC, which forms a silica gel hemispherical lens. The silica gel lens is packaged above the phosphor powder along the centre to form the no-reflection and high-efficient-luminescence unitary WLED light source. A plurality of unitary WLED light sources are assembled to a high-power WLED light source by capacity expansion. The light source can be make into a street lamp, an emergency lighting lamp, a safety lighting lamp for mine roadway, a mine cap lamp, a safety lighting lamp for subway and airport, an indoor lighting lamp and other WLED lighting lamps. The invention has the advantages of scientifically reasonable structure, low production cost, good radiating property, low power consumption, high efficient luminescence, long service life and other advantages.

A motion sensing system is disclosed having a housing or mounting, a sensor, a shield and a cover. A spacer and a printed circuit board may also be included. The cylindrical shaped sensor is placed within the cup shaped shield with the spacer disposed between the sensor and the printed circuit board. The shield and the printed circuit board are then fastened together. Next, the bottom or nose of the mounting shield is placed into the dish shaped cover and the combination is fastened to the housing with the cover extending into an opening in the bottom wall of the housing. The system allows a downward looking motion sensing capability in addition to the typical forward sensing capability which may also be installed in the housing. The housing may then be connected to a security lighting fixture. An even simpler version is a motion sensing system having a simple mounting for a two transducer PIR sensor where one of the transducers is covered and a Fresnel lens is absent. An effective short range motion detector results and the sensor may be aimed in any direction.

A LED lighting device enables the assembly of one or more LED products in a variety of structures for a broad range of applications. In particular, one or more prefabricated individual water-resistant LED products are assembled in an attachable/detachable fixing frame in a variety of structures for use in a broad range of applications which include street lights, security lighting, tunnel lights, floodlights, etc. A further advantage of a LED lighting device is that it can be conveniently used with AC power, without the use of an AC/DC adapter or a stabilizer.
