Embodiment Construction

[0019] The terms "first", "second", etc. do not denote any order, number or importance herein, but are used to distinguish one element from another. The term "a" herein does not denote a limitation of quantity, but rather indicates that there is at least one of the referenced item. The modifier "about" used in conjunction with a quantity is inclusive of the stated value and has the meaning dictated by the context (eg, includes the degree of error associated with measurement of the particular quantity). Additionally, the term "combination" includes blends, mixtures, alloys, reaction products, and the like.

[0020] Also, in this specification, the suffix "(s)" is generally intended to include both the singular and the plural of the item it modifies, thereby including one or more of that item (e.g., "channel" may include one or more channels, unless otherwise noted). Reference throughout the specification to "one embodiment," "another embodiment," "an embodiment," etc., means ...

Abstract

The invention provides an electrode used in an electrochemical machining process. The electrode includes a conductive element defining at least one channel and an insulating coating partially covering side surfaces of the conductive element. The insulating coating does not cover at least one of the first and second exposed sections of the conductive element, wherein the first and second exposed sections are approximately 180 degrees apart and extend generally along the longitudinal axis of the conductive element. The insulating coating also does not cover the exposed front ends of the conductive elements. The present invention also provides an electrochemical machining method for forming a non-circular hole in a workpiece using an electrode.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is to Bin Wei et al., entitled "Method and tool for forming non-circular holes using a selectively coated electrode", U.S. Serial No. 12 / 118,791 A continuation-in-part of a patent application, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to electrochemical machining. More particularly, the present invention relates to electrodes and electrochemical machining processes for forming non-circular holes. Background technique [0004] The efficiency of a gas turbine engine is directly proportional to the temperature of the turbine gases delivered from the engine's combustors and flowing over the turbine blades. For example, for a gas turbine engine with larger blades, turbine gas temperatures approaching 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,700 degrees Fahrenheit) are typical. To withstand such high temperatures, these large blades are ma...
