Problems solved by technology

[0005] The disadvantage of these arrangements is that it is difficult in practice to obtain even tension, partly due to inhomogeneities and imperfections in the drum head, and partly due to the difficulty of fitting the rollers or nylon blocks to the shell very precisely

Embodiment Construction

[0031] As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 , the drum includes a drum shell 11 , a drumhead 12 , a branch ring 13 and a shell ring 15 . The drum shell 11 has a standard laminated resin bonded hardwood construction. It is cylindrical and open-ended. Shell ring 15 is made of polished stainless steel and fits securely around the top of shell 11 . The shell ring has an extension 16 extending upwards and outwards.

[0032] Drumhead 12 includes a skin 17 and a head ring or circumferential ring 18 around its periphery. A circumferential ring 18 is located on the outside of the drum shell 11 so that the skin 17 is tensioned over the open end. The support ring 13 is of polished stainless steel and has an extension 19 extending outwardly and downwardly. The branch ring 13 is pressed against the circumferential ring 18 .

[0033] The support ring 13 is fixed and positioned by the clamp ring 21 . The clamp ring 21 is made of C-section steel strip, which generally includes a flat spine 22 with...

Abstract

A drum comprising a drum shell (11), a drum head (12), a counter-hoop (13) and a shell hoop (15). A drum skin (17) extends over the open end of the drum shell (11) and has a circumferential bead (18). The counter-hoop (13) has a downwardly and outwardly extending flange (19) which bears on the bead (18). The shell hoop (15) has a rim (16) which extends upwardly and outwardly. An adjustable clamp ring (21) engages the flange (19) of the counter-hoop (13) and the rim (16) of the shell hoop (15) through correspondingly inclined portions (23, 24). The clamp ring (21) has a breach (41) and a tightening mechanism so that when the clamp ring is tightened , the counter-hoop (13) is forced downwards, thereby tightening the skin (17).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to drums, ie percussion instruments such as snare drums, djembe, bass drums, air drums and the like. The invention relates in particular to the tuning of drumheads. Background technique [0002] In existing drums, the drumhead skin is stretched over the open end of the cylindrical shell and held in place by means of rings or the like attached to the sides of the drumhead. The skin is tensioned by tension bolt like devices acting on the rings engaging conical joints mounted on the drum shell. When these bolts are tensioned, the rings abut against the sides of the skin, thereby tensioning the skin. [0003] To ensure that the skin is evenly tensioned and thus "tuned", each bolt must be adjusted from time to time, usually at least 6-8 times. The process is complicated because when one bolt is adjusted it is affected by the tension on the skin created by other bolts, making tuning time-consuming and demanding. [0004] Brit...
