Embodiment Construction

[0024] FIG. 1 shows the circuit arrangement of a preferred embodiment of a SHDSL / SDSL communication device with lifeline functionality according to the invention. The circuit arrangement shown in Fig. 1 may eg be plugged on a line card or modem or the like associated with the respective network termination (NT). In the particular embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the circuit arrangement is provided for operation with ISDN terminal equipment (TE). Naturally, however, the circuit arrangement can also be used for analog terminals. Furthermore, in general, the circuit arrangement can also be used for other xDSL communication technologies.

[0025] As shown in FIG. 1 , the communication device includes a SHDSL / SDSL transceiver 4 coupled to a transmission line 1 of a corresponding communication network via a transformer 2 . The SHDSL / SDSL transceiver 4 is used for transmitting and receiving SHDSL / SDSL signals on the transmission line 1, which especially includes voice signals. The SHDS...

Abstract

A DSL communication apparatus with lifeline functionality is provided, the DSL coomunication apparatus (3) in particular being suitable for CVoDSL ('Channelized Voice over Digital Subscriber Line') transmission. The DSL communication apparatus (3) comprises a central processing unit (11) which detects a local power failure state of a local power supply unit (23) being associated with the DSL communication apparatus (3). In this case, the central processing unit (11) changes the operation of the DSL communication apparatus (3) from a normal operation mode to an intermediate operation mode, generates an interrupt for stopping a voice coprocessor unit (8), initializes a download of a lifeline operation firmware from a FLASH memory (12) to the voice coprocessor unit (8), and then starts a new initialization of the voice coprocessor unit (8). Thereafter, the central processing unit (11) changes the operation of the DSL communication apparatus (3) from the intermediate operation mode to the lifeline operation mode by switching the power supply of the DSL communication apparatus (3) from the local power supply unit (23) to an auxiliary power supply unit (20) being coupled to the transmission line (1).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a DSL communication device with lifeline functionality. In particular, the present invention relates to a DSL communication device with lifeline functionality suitable for transmitting and receiving DSL signals, including voice signals, over a transmission line of a DSL communication network, preferably CVoDSL (" Channelized Voice over Digital Subscriber Line"). Background technique [0002] Current and upcoming xDSL systems have to offer higher bit rates. On the other hand, upcoming xDSL systems are believed to no longer use POTS ("Plain Old Telephone Service") or ISDN ("Integrated Services Digital Network") frequency basebands. However, in prior art xDSL transmission networks, these basebands are usually used to transmit voice signals together with xDSL data signals on the xDSL transmission lines. For example, in an ADSL ("Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line") transmission network, voice signals are often transmitte...
