Embodiment Construction

[0040] image 3 A typical system is shown that enables telephone calls to be made over a data network. The terminals 10, 11 are connected to an associated digital line card (DLC) 12 in the private branch exchange PBX A. Voice, facsimile, other messages, and signaling information are switched together via a time division multiplexed (TDM) backplane 15 to an IP gateway card 20 which interfaces to a data network 30 . Gateway card 20 performs traffic conversion between the format used by the PBX and the format required for transmission over data network 30 . The gateway's function also includes handling the translation between dialed numbers and Internet Protocol addresses. Traffic is typically carried over a data network according to the TCP / IP or UDP / IP format; signaling is typically carried in TCP packets, while voice data is typically carried in streams of Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets . Voice or other voice-band information is enca...

Abstract

A received data stream is formed into a stream of packets, each packet comprising a payload section of data and an overhead section. In forming the packets, a template overhead section is created for use by the stream of packets and this template is applied to the data to form the packets. This avoids the need to individually pass packets through a routing stack, thus reducing the processing demands on the processor which constructs the data packets and reducing the transmission delay experienced by data. The template overhead section can be formed by sending a packet through a routing stack. Another aspect describes apparatus for processing packets where a first processor processes signalling packets and a second processor processes real-time data packets. The first processor can be, used to create the template overhead section before passing the template information to the second processor where it can be used in forming the real-time data packets.

Description

Field of invention: [0001] The present invention relates to a method and device for processing data packets, which can be used for processing Internet Protocol (IP) packets. Background technique: [0002] Packet and cell-based transport protocols are increasingly gaining acceptance due to the ability to transport a wide range of communication types such as voice, data, video, etc. The Internet Protocol (IP) is widely adopted by industry as a networking protocol to provide communication between interconnected networks and between computers with various hardware architectures and operating systems. H.323 of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) protocol suite of the Internet Engineering Task Force are both under development as standards for IP and Internet telephony. Figure 1 shows a typical manner in which voice data is processed for transport over an IP network. First, voice data is received (2) and usually compressed (4)...
