Embodiment Construction

[0033] Throughout the drawings, the same reference numerals are used for similar or corresponding elements.

[0034] As mentioned in the Background section, many communication systems today include multiple access networks that provide alternative access options for mobile terminals having multiple access interfaces. figure 1 Such a multiple access communication system in which the present invention can be used is schematically illustrated. The illustrated IP-based communication system 100 includes a mobile terminal 10 connected to a network service 30 through an access network (AN) 20 .

[0035] The present invention can be used in connection with any mobile node / terminal (also called a multi-access terminal) associated with at least two access network interfaces. In the illustrated system 100, multiple access terminals 10 are represented by a laptop computer 10-1, a cellular telephone 10-2, and a PDA 10-3. The access network interfaces of the multiple access terminal typic...

Abstract

The invention relates to traffic handling in multi-access communication systems ( 100 ). A network-level solution is proposed, in which the access networks ( 20 ) provide a network-based ATC server ( 61 ) with access-related information comprising measured performance parameters. The ATC server may also receive information from the multi-access terminal ( 10 ), e.g. about available access networks. The ATC server coordinates the information and uses it for adaptive traffic control calculations. This typically involves continuously executing an adaptive traffic control algorithm for reaching predetermined control objectives. The control algorithm tracks the reference values and outputs a feedback control signal that is sent back to the user devices. Based on the feedback control signal themulti-access terminals spread their traffic over the available access networks.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to multi-access communication systems, and more particularly to a method for user traffic control in such systems. Background technique [0002] Today, Internet Protocol (IP) based network services are provided by several types of wired and wireless network technologies. Internet service providers (ISPs) and network operators who own and operate several different types of access networks are beginning to offer service bundling, such as general packet radio service (GPRS) and wireless local area network (WLAN) access within the same subscription. Mobile end-user devices providing multiple access interfaces are also a reality and expected to be typical (eg Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and laptops with GPRS, WLAN, Ethernet and Bluetooth). [0003] In general, multi-access communication systems are more flexible than single-access networks, but they also introduce additional complexity and involve a number of ...
