This allows the treatment to continue, however, increases the volume of blood that is recirculated
Changing flow on existing catheters involves disconnecting and reconnecting lines, increases the clinician's handling of the catheter and increases the potential for microbial contamination and infection, and prolongs the duration of dialysis treatment
This leads to various disadvantages including increased cost and patient discomfort

Embodiment Construction

[0060] The disclosed catheters are discussed in terms of catheters for transferring (withdrawing, introducing, etc.) fluids in a patient's body, and more particularly, catheters employing a tubular body with an integral hub and valves to facilitate bi-directional fluid flow to resolve occlusion problems Exemplary embodiments of and methods of use. Catheters can also employ bi-directional fluid flow to prevent clogging. It is conceivable that the scope of application of the catheter that can be used in the present invention includes surgery, diagnosis and related treatment of patients with major and minor diseases. It is also conceivable that the principles associated with the catheters disclosed herein include utilizing various catheter-related therapies, such as hemodialysis, cardiac, celiac, urological, bowel, etc. therapy, eg for chronic, acute, etc. applications. It is desirable to use catheters to transport fluids such as medications, saline, bodily fluids such as blood,...

Abstract

A catheter is provided including a tubular body having a proximal end and a distal end. The body includes a first lumen and a second lumen with a septum disposed therebetween. The proximal end includes a valve and a hub that are integral with the body. The hub includes a first conduit and a second conduit. The valve includes a first port and a second port that are rotatable, about a longitudinal axis of the body, to establish fluid communication between the lumens and the conduits. The distal end of the tubular body may be configured for insertion with a subject. The conduits may be connectable to a medical apparatus.

Description

[0001] Related application information [0002] This patent application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 60 / 543,623, filed February 11, 2004, by Haarala et al., and to U.S. Application Serial No. 10 / 602,897, filed June 24, 2003 Continuation-in-Part of PCT International Application No. PCT / US03 / 09687 filed March 28, 2003 designating the United States, the entire contents of which documents are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to a medical catheter device, and more particularly, to a catheter that facilitates bi-directional fluid flow and solves the problem of occlusion during use. Background technique [0004] Certain known catheters are tubular, flexible medical devices used for the transfer (withdrawal, introduction) of fluids in lumens, tubes, vessels, etc. of the body. Typically, the catheter device is inserted into the body cavity through a sheath, stylet, trocar, or the like. [0005...
