Method of detecting vehicle-operator state

A method of detecting the state of an operator of a vehicle utilizes a low-cost operator state detection system having no more than one camera located preferably in the vehicle and directed toward a driver. A processor of the detection system processes preferably three points of the facial feature of the driver to calculate head pose and thus determine driver state (i.e. distracted, drowsy, etc.). The head pose is generally a three dimensional vector that includes the two angular components of yaw and pitch, but preferably not roll. Preferably, an output signal of the processor is sent to a counter measure system to alert the driver and / or accentuate vehicle safety response.

The present invention provides methods and systems for passively and automatically detecting the presence of a sample (the “sample detection phase”) upon application of the sample to a biosensor, identifying the sample detection time and then initiating the measurement of a targeted characteristic, e.g., the concentration of one or more analytes, of the sample (the “measurement phase”), immediately upon sample detection. The subject methods and systems do not employ or involve the application of an electrical signal from an external source to the electrochemical cell for purposes of performing the sample detection phase and are, thus, less complicated and involve fewer steps and components.

Method and apparatus for reclaiming oil from waste plastic

PCT No. PCT / JP97 / 00572 Sec. 371 Date Jan. 8, 1998 Sec. 102(e) Date Jan. 8, 1998 PCT Filed Feb. 27, 1997 PCT Pub. No. WO97 / 31990 PCT Pub. Date Sep. 4, 1997This invention provides a method for reclaiming oil from waste plastic in such a way that thermosetting resins and solid foreign matter in the plastic will not pose a problem. This method greatly reduces the burden of presorting the garbage or industrial waste. To achieve this objective when oil is to be reclaimed from a waste plastic containing chlorine compounds, such as vinyl chloride, the plastic must first be stripped of chlorine. Prior to pyrolysis, while being conveyed forward in a continuous stream, the plastic is mixed with heated sand and / or an additive agent to raise its temperature to 250-350 DEG C. This creates a product which is comprised of a mixture of sand and substantially dechlorinated plastic. The product is mixed with heated sand to heat it directly to a temperature of 350-500 DEG C. It is maintained at this temperature until pyrolysis occurs. In order to obtain high-quality oil with a low boiling point, a first gas / liquid separation process separates the product obtained from the aforesaid pyrolysis into liquid high-boiling point oil, gaseous low-boiling point oil and low molecular-weight gases, and recirculates the liquid high-boiling point oil to the pyrolysis process, and a second gas / liquid separation process separates the gaseous low-boiling point oil and low molecular-weight gases into liquid low-boiling point oil and low molecular-weight gases. The first and second gas / liquid separation process are connected in sequence.

Distributed optical fibre measurements

A method of obtaining a distributed measurement comprises deploying an optical fibre in a measurement region of interest, and launching into it a first optical signal at a first wavelength λ0 and a high power level, a second optical signal at a second wavelength λ−1, and a third optical signal at the first wavelength λ0 and a low power level. These optical signals generate backscattered light at the second wavelength λ−1 arising from Raman scattering of the first optical signal which is indicative of a parameter to be measured, at the first wavelength λ0 arising from Rayleigh scattering of the first optical signal, at the second wavelength λ—1 arising from Rayleigh scattering of the second optical signal, and at the first wavelength λ0 arising from Rayleigh scattering of the third optical signal. The backscattered light is detected to generate four output signals, and a final output signal is derived by normalising the Raman scattering signal to a function derived from the three Rayleigh scattering signals, which removes the effects of wavelength-dependent and nonlinear loss.
