Abstract

A system (10) for providing general packet radio service (GPRS) to mobile stations (12), comprising a packet network (22) operable to transmit information packets, connected to the packet network (22) and operable A database (20) for storing profile information associated with the mobile station (12), and a base station (14) operable to communicate with the mobile station (12) via a wireless interface (30). The system (10) also includes an access point (16) connected to the base station (14) and the packet network (22). The access point (16) is operable to communicate with the mobile station (12) through the base station (14). The system also includes a GPRS support node (18) connected to the packet network (22) and operable to communicate with the access point (16). The GPRS support node (18) is also operable to monitor the location of the mobile station (12), and to route information packets for the mobile station (12) to the access point (16). Additionally, the system (10) includes an interworking point (26) connected to the packet network (22). The interworking point (26) is operable to communicate with the GPRS support node (18) using a first protocol, and communicate with the public network (11) using a second protocol. The interworking point (26) is also operable to interwork between the first protocol and the second protocol.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of communication systems, and more particularly to systems and methods for providing general packet radio services in private wireless networks. Background technique [0002] General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks are commonly used to provide packet data services to mobile stations or wireless units. The mobile station communicates with the base station over a radio interface, and the mobile station sends and receives data over the radio interface in the form of data packets. A GPRS network also typically includes support nodes that facilitate communications between mobile stations and other devices in the GPRS network. The support node also facilitates communication with external networks such as the Internet. [0003] The traditional GPRS system generally uses the frame relay network as the backbone network in the system. A frame relay backbone transfers information between different devic...
