Embodiment Construction

[0015] The present invention can be applied to devices with user interfaces, especially devices with displays, such as portable phones, pagers, communicators, smart phones, and electronic forms. Components of such a device that are not relevant to the present invention will not be discussed here.

[0016] As an example, a mobile telephone 1 incorporating the present invention is shown in FIG. 1 . The phone 1 comprises a display 2, at which point a menu 3 with selectable items 4 is displayed. When an item is displayed by the highlight 5, the item is selected. In this case, the highlight is represented by a surrounding square that is brighter than the surrounding background. The characters themselves have also been enlarged and reshaped etc. Selection of an item may also be accompanied by audible signals, such as clicks or speech, and vibrations. For the sake of simplicity, in this embodiment, all these selected representation forms are referred to as objects of the user int...

Abstract

The invention relates to a device (1) with an interaction dependent user interface (2). Particularly a value of a parameter of an object (5) of the interface is dependent of the user activities, i.e. an object of the interface behaves differently in dependence of how fast the user is navigating and how frequent selections are made. In one embodiment, the user interface comprises a menu (3) of selectable items (4). The function is defined such that the value of the parameter is increased by an increment every time the user selects a new item and the increment is decaying with time, the value of the parameter varying between a maximum and a minimum value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device with an interaction-dependent user interface. More specifically, the parameters of the objects of the interface depend on the timing and frequency of user movements within a menu. The present invention provides an interface that is more responsive because it changes with the user's activities. Background technique [0002] A small portable device with a display has a menu with items that can be selected by the user to control the operation of the device. A selected item may eg be highlighted, ie the characters are displayed in a different or opposite color compared to the surrounding background and font. The user may be able to change the shape, color and speed of the highlight, but only as a fixed setting, and the interface does not adapt to the way the user moves the highlight, such as fast or slow, frequent or infrequent movement. [0003] However, users behave differently in different situations and appl...
