Abstract

The variation computed by a variation computing section (11) is stored in a variation storage section (12). A variation comparing section (13) compares the variation in a frame one before the frame for which gray-scale correction is performed and the frame two before. If the variation is lager than a predetermined value, the correction value data for the frame one before is not used, and a correction value table for the frame before the variation is selected from a correction value computing section (15) and read out. If the variation is smaller than the predetermined value, the correction value table for the frame one before where the variation is small is read from the correction value computing section (15) and written in a look-up table (16). Correction data (level data) is read out of the address of the look-up table (16) and outputted as a luminance signal after the gray-scale correction. Gray-scale correction is performed after selecting the most-suitable correction data depending on the frame for which gray-scale correction is performed according to the variation of the screen, and most-suitable gray-scale correction can be performed without any frame memory.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a gradation correction device for correcting the gradation of brightness of an image signal using a histogram. Background technique [0002] Conventionally, a method of performing gradation correction of an image signal using a histogram (distribution of luminance of the image signal) is known. The basic concept of gradation correction using a histogram is as follows. The frequency of occurrence of each luminance signal level is calculated from the input image signal, and a histogram is created. This histogram data is accumulated from low brightness to make a cumulative histogram. This cumulative histogram is normalized to obtain the cumulative luminance distribution. A normalized cumulative histogram is calculated such that the maximum value of the cumulative luminance distribution reaches the maximum value of the output luminance level. The gradation correction of the image signal is performed using the accumulate...
