Embodiment Construction

[0043] Figure 2a to 2b A piezoelectric speaker 20 according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described. The speaker 20 includes a thin film 22 and a piezoelectric element 24 mounted to the thin film 22.

[0044] The segmented electrode 26 is further provided on one side of the piezoelectric element 24, and the unstructured electrode 28 is provided on the other side of the piezoelectric element 24. The unstructured electrode 28 is preferably provided between the film 22 and the piezoelectric element 24, such as Figure 2a Shown in.

[0045] The segmented electrode 26 includes three individually addressable electrode segments 30a, 30b, and 30c. The electrode segment is a disc (30a) and two rings (30b and 30c).

[0046] In piezoelectric materials, when the electrodes are activated, only the material between the electrodes is actuated. Therefore, when, for example, the electrode segment 30a (and the unstructured electrode 28) is activated, only the portion 32a of th...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a piezoelectric speaker comprising a membrane (22), and an actuating layer comprising at least one piezoelectric element (24) mounted to the membrane, which at least one piezoelectric element is adapted to, when actuated, cause the membrane to vibrate in order to generate sound. The speaker is characterized by means (26, 36, 40, 42) for varying the fraction of the actuating layer that is actuated depending on the sound frequency to be generated, wherein a smaller fraction of the actuating layer is actuated for higher sound frequencies. Varying the fraction of the actuating layer that is actuated depending on the sound frequency to be generated allows reduction of the power consumption of the speaker with maintained sound pressure level. The invention also relates to a method for driving a piezoelectric speaker.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a piezoelectric speaker, which includes a film and an actuation layer including at least one piezoelectric element mounted to the film, wherein the at least one piezoelectric element is used to cause the film to vibrate when actuated To produce sound. The invention also relates to a method for driving a piezoelectric speaker. Background technique [0002] Figure 1a to 1b A basic prior art piezoelectric speaker 10 is described, which includes: a thin film 12; a piezoelectric element 14 mounted to the thin film; and a pair of electrodes 16, 18 for use in response to an electrical input signal representing the sound to be produced And actuate the piezoelectric element. When the piezoelectric element 14 is actuated, the piezoelectric element starts to vibrate, and the vibration is converted by the membrane 12 into sound. [0003] Generally speaking, piezoelectric speakers are well known for their power efficiency. However, thi...
