Embodiment Construction

[0031] The device and method of the present invention utilizes a metallic layer liner, such as an aluminum layer with a paper back, which is present in all cigarette packs. Rather than applying a security tag to the cigarette pack, the apparatus and method of the present invention integrates a security tag onto the metal layer of the liner during liner formation. Thus, once the liner is formed, a security liner (eg, EAS security tag or RFID security tag) is embedded within the liner itself. Also, cashiers can disable these security tags close to the point of sale (POS). Additionally, manipulation of the liner (eg, removal of the torn portion) to access the cigarettes once the user has opened the pack of cigarettes may also render the security label ineffective.

[0032] figure 1 A cigarette pack liner 20 with an integrated security label 22 is described; in Figure 11 A security tag of a second embodiment (which will be described in detail later) is shown in , but it should...

Abstract

A cigarette pack having at least one security tag formed from the metal layer of the cigarette pack liner. One version of the security tag utilizes a preformed coil that is electrically coupled to a portion of the metal layer to form a capacitor and thereby complete a coil / capacitor security tag. Another version of the security tag is forms the entire antenna from the metal layer and a radio frequency identification (RFID) integrated circuit is then coupled to the antenna. In both versions, the surrounding metal layer is severed from the location of either security tag to the edge of the liner.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 752,987 filed December 22, 2005 under 35 U.S.C. §119(e), the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to security tags and, more particularly, discloses security tags integrated in a liner (eg, aluminum) of a cigarette pack. Background technique [0004] The presence or removal of retail items in inventory or in retail stores can be tracked or detected in the jurisdiction of Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS), which now also includes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). EAS or RFID detection is typically achieved by applying EAS or RFID security tags to the item or its packaging, and when these security tags are exposed to a predetermined electromagnetic field (e.g., on a pedestal at a retail store exit), they activate to provide Certain types of alarms and / ...
