Problems solved by technology

[0005] periodic scheduling and on-demand scheduling are fairly easy to implement on networks operating with centralized control, but are significantly more difficult to implement on networks with distributed control
This difficulty is further exacerbated in networks spanning multiple hop distances because not all devices will communicate directly with each other

Embodiment Construction

[0012] In the following description, for purposes of explanation and not limitation, specific details are set forth, such as specific architectures, interfaces, techniques, etc., in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that the present invention may be practiced in other embodiments that depart from these specific details. For the purpose of clarity, detailed descriptions of well-known devices, circuits, and methods are omitted so as not to obscure the description of the present invention with unnecessary detail.

[0013] As noted above, the present invention is directed to devices and networks that are dynamically relocatable between various possible channels. In a typical embodiment, the possible channels are those normally allocated or licensed to primary users such as television broadcasters, but the actual occupancy of each channel varies. For example, due to the possibility of interfe...

Abstract

In a distributed control cognitive radio network, each secondary user (200) in the network broadcasts a parameter (125) indicating the minimum silent period sensing requirement for periodic silent periods that the device needs in order to reliably detect the primary user (290) . Each device (200) in the network adjusts its silent period sensing rate to accommodate the highest minimum sensing requirement (155, 160), thereby providing optimal efficiency relative to silent period support while ensuring All devices in (200) provide at least their minimum silent period sensing requirements (150). Both the interval between periodic silent periods and the duration of these silent periods are negotiated (155) among the devices on the network. The Quiet Period Index (140) is used to synchronize all devices to a common time base. Techniques for efficiently coordinating on-demand silent period requests, as well as techniques for supporting different silent period schedules for multiple primary user classes are also provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of cognitive radio communications, and in particular to methods and systems for scheduling (scheduling) quiet-periods among distributed users to facilitate channel monitoring. Background technique [0002] Cognitive radio is a communication scheme in which devices monitor licensed channels for activity and only establish communications on inactive channels. This is a particularly feasible solution for providing unused communication bandwidth for local area communication networks, such as allowing local (home) networks to operate on unused television broadcast channels. Such local networks are commonly used to allow devices and electrical appliances within the home to communicate and interact with each other, generally following direct or pre-programmed instructions from the user. Such communications can range from user instructions to preheat an oven to the exchange of audio / visual information between cameras...
