Problems solved by technology

This limits the maximum rotational speed because the seal cannot follow sudden changes in profile due to its inherent deflection, whereas at fast rotations needed to provide a continuous seal, the seal experiences more sharp edges inherent to sudden changes in profile wear and tear

Embodiment Construction

[0026] First refer to figure 1 , the pump is formed by a casing 10 housing a rotor 11 engaged with a seal 12 supported by an elastic hollow elongate member in the form of a tube 13 .

[0027] The housing 10 may be molded from plastic material and provided with a fluid inlet 14 and a fluid outlet 15 . Such as figure 1 As shown, the inlet 14 and outlet 15 are axially aligned (but this is not required). The interior of the housing 10 has an inner surface 16 defining a longitudinally extending support surface for the rotor 11 . The inner surface 16 has a circular section and can lie on an imaginary cylindrical surface or a frusto-conical surface in the longitudinal direction.

[0028] The inner surface 16 of the housing 10 is provided with an axially and circumferentially extending gap between the outlet 15 and the inlet 14 which is filled by a seal 12 which is described in more detail below. The housing 10 comprises a chamber 17 extending behind the seal 12 , said chamber 17 ...

Abstract

A pump includes a housing (10) and a rotor (11) rotatable in the housing (10). The housing (10) has a fluid inlet (14) and a fluid outlet (15). The rotor (11) comprises two second profiled surfaces (21, 22; 50a, 50b, 50c) radially inside the housing (10) formed with the inner surface (16) of the housing for The rotor (11) conveys the fluid from the inlet (14) to the corresponding chamber (23, 24; 51a, 51b, 51c) of the outlet (15). A seal (12; 56) is provided between the outlet (15) and the inlet to engage the forming surfaces (21, 22; 50a, 50b, 50c) so that when each forming surface (21, 22; 50a, 50b, 50c) Preventing fluid transfer from the outlet (15) to the inlet (14) while traveling from the outlet (15) to the inlet (14). The shape of the surfaces (21, 22; 50a, 50b, 50c) provides the optimum volume of the chambers (23, 24; 51a, 51b, 51c) and by springs providing uniform force along the axial length of the surfaces (21, 22) means (13, 39, 41, 59) to push the seal (12; 56) into contact with the rotor (11).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to pumps. Background technique [0002] It is known from PCT / GB2005 / 003300 and PCT / GB2010 / 000798 to form pumps having a housing and a rotor rotatably accommodated in the inner surface of the housing. The housing has an inlet and an outlet, and the rotor has a housing engaging surface cooperating with and sealing against the inner surface of the housing. The rotor has at least one shaped surface radially inward of the housing engagement surface and together with the inner surface of the housing forms a chamber for conveying fluid from the inlet to the outlet as the rotor rotates. A seal is disposed between the outlet and the inlet to engage the shaped surface to prevent fluid from flowing from the outlet to the inlet. [0003] In the pumps of PCT / GB2005 / 003300 and PCT / GB2010 / 000798 the surface has a shape formed by intersecting an imaginary cylindrical rotor with an axis normal to the rotor axis. This produces a surface ...
