Problems solved by technology

[0011] One disadvantage of the system 100 is that when the electrodes 124 are moved to initiate the arc, the power contacts 108 also need to move
As the current carrying capacity of the cable 104 increases, the size of the cable 104 increases, but the flexibility of the cable 104 decreases
Reduced flexibility of cable 104 reduces versatility and maneuverability of welding torch 112

Embodiment Construction

[0079] Figure 2A is an exploded view of the electrode body, the elastic element, and the power contact of the embodiment of the present invention. The system 200 includes an electrode body 202, a resilient member 204, and a power contact 206 (also referred to as a power connection). The power contact 206 is, for example, passed through a power cable (e.g., figure 1 The power supply cable 104) is in electrical communication with a power source (not shown). The power supply provides current to the power contacts 206 for operation similar to figure 1 Torch 112 is shown as a plasma arc welding torch. The electrode body 202 includes a reaction surface 208 configured to be in electrical communication with the resilient element 204 . The reaction surface 208 is disposed spaced apart from the proximal end 210 of the electrode body 202 . In certain embodiments, reaction surface 208 defines a flange extending radially from longitudinal axis A. As shown in FIG. In some embodimen...

Abstract

A component for a contact start plasma arc torch is provided. The part includes a hollow body defining a channel having a longitudinal axis. The channel is capable of slidably receiving an electrode body along the longitudinal axis. The component includes a contact element disposed within the hollow body and includes a first surface and a second surface. The first surface is adapted to facilitate electrical communication with a power source and the second surface is adapted to form physical contact with a surface of the electrode body when the plasma arc torch is operated in a transferred arc mode. Furthermore, no physical contact is made between the second surface and the surface of the electrode body when the torch is operated in the pilot arc mode.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 11 / 709,315, filed February 20, 2007, and claiming the benefit of priority to U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 774,451, filed February 17, 2006. The applicant of the above-mentioned two applications at the same time, and provide the way of citing them as a whole to incorporate them here. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to plasma arc welding torches, and more particularly to electrodes and welding torches for contact start plasma arc welding torches. Background technique [0004] Material handling devices such as plasma arc torches and lasers are widely used in the cutting and marking of metallic materials called workpieces. Plasma arc torches typically include a torch body, electrodes mounted within the body, a nozzle with a central discharge hole, electrical connections, passages for cooling and arc ...
