Embodiment Construction

[0118] figure 1 A cross-sectional view of the plasma arc torch 100 is shown. The plasma torch tip is constructed from a number of different consumables such as electrode 105 , nozzle 110 , retaining cap 115 , swirl ring 117 or shroud 125 . Nozzle 110 has a central outlet orifice mounted within the torch body. The torch and torch tip may contain electrical connections, passages for cooling, and passages for arc control fluid (eg, plasma gas). Shield 125 may be used to prevent molten spatter from damaging other components of the torch, such as electrode 105 , nozzle 110 , retaining cap 115 or swirl ring 120 . The electrode 105 may include a heat exchanger 120 at a proximal end 127 of the electrode 105 .

[0119] Plasma arc torches capable of reaching into difficult to access areas such as trenches or corners may have consumables that are elongated to provide the additional reach necessary to access these types of locations. These longer lengths of consumables (ie, "pointed" co...

Abstract

The invention discloses highly accessible consumables for a plasma arc cutting system. A nozzle for a plasma arc torch is provided. The nozzle includes a substantially hollow elongated nozzle body capable of receiving an electrode, the body defining a longitudinal axis, a distal end, and a proximal end. The nozzle also includes a swirl sleeve attachable to an inner surface of the nozzle body, the swirl sleeve configured to impart a swirl motion to gas introduced into the nozzle. The nozzle additionally includes a nozzle tip connected to the proximal end of the nozzle body, a nozzle guard, and an insulator configured to connect the nozzle tip to the nozzle guard such that the nozzle guard The shroud and the nozzle tip are electrically insulated from each other while transferring thermal energy between the nozzle shroud and the nozzle tip.
