Embodiment Construction

[0019] An object holder for securely holding an object in a through object printing system, and a through object printing system configured to operatively use implementations of the object holder of the present invention are disclosed. example.

[0020] An "object" has at least one surface on which ink is to be printed. Exemplary objects are sporting equipment and equipment, golf clubs and balls, memorabilia, coffee mugs, and the like.

[0021] A "direct to object printing system" or simply "printing system" is a printer designed to print on the surface of an object. figure 1 The direct object printing system includes at least the following functional components: at least one printhead, a support member, an actuator, a controller, and an object holder.

[0022] A "printhead" is an element (such as an inkjet) that ejects or ejects small droplets of marking material, such as ink, onto the surface of an object, thereby forming a mark on the object. In one embodiment, a direct-...

Abstract

Disclosed are an object holder for retaining an object in a direct-to-object printing system and the direct-to-object printing system configured to use various embodiments of the object holder of thepresent invention. In one embodiment, the object holder has a back support configured to slideably traverse a support member positioned parallel to a plane formed by at least one print head configuredto eject a marking material onto a surface of the object. A top arm and a bottom arm are attached to the back support. At least one retention block is attached to each of the top arm and bottom arm for collectively retaining the object to the object holder.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to printing systems for depositing ink directly on the surface of an object, and more particularly, to an apparatus for securely holding an object in a direct-to-object printing system while it is being printed. Background technique [0002] Printers, well known in the document reproduction art, apply marking material, such as ink or toner, to the paper. In order to print something on an object with non-negligible depth, such as a coffee mug, bottle, etc., a label is usually printed and the printed label is applied to the surface of the object. However, in some manufacturing and production environments it is desirable to print directly onto the object itself, but this operation creates a variety of hurdles that must be overcome in order for such dedicated direct-to-object printing systems to be more widely adopted in the market accept. One of these challenges is how to secure the object in such specialized printers while...
