Problems solved by technology

However, it is difficult to determine how much motion-damaged data has been acquired during imaging
Consequently, the final image characteristics (such as signal-to-noise ratio) may vary between otherwise identical scans because different amounts of data may be used in image reconstruction
Additionally, for medical imaging procedures that require ionizing radiation (such as CT imaging), it is desirable to limit radiation exposure to the patient and to any operator close to the imaging system
However, collecting corrupted data that would eventually be rejected would still expose the patient to radiation without any added benefit
Devices that use motion compensation methods to detect motion during acquisition inherently suffer from the same problem because the image data must still be acquired first

Embodiment Construction

[0010] A further understanding of the exemplary embodiments will be obtained with reference to the following description and drawings, wherein like elements are designated with like reference numerals. Exemplary embodiments relate to systems and methods for optimizing medical imaging procedures. Specifically, the exemplary embodiments describe systems and methods for predicting patient motion and ceasing acquisition of images during periods of predicted motion. Some patient movements may be voluntary, such as when the patient moves to relocate into a more comfortable position or to address an itch. Research has shown that neurophysiological measurements such as EEG, MEG or EMG show patterns that can be used to predict and characterize actual body movements before they occur. These measurements may correspond to the thought process that causes the muscle to contract or conveys the signal to the muscle group performing the active movement. A similar approach can also be used t...

Abstract

A system, method and non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for monitoring motion during medical imaging are provided. The monitoring of the motion includes initiating an acquisition of imagedata, measuring physiological signals of a patient, generating a prediction signal by integrating the physiological signals, determining whether patient motion is likely to occur based on the prediction signal and modifying the acquisition of image data, if it is predicted that patient motion is likely to occur.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of the patent application with the application date of March 12, 2014, entitled "Neurophysiological Monitoring for Prospective Motion Gating in Radiological Imaging", and application number 201480016725.8. Background technique [0002] Acquisition of medical images for tomography (eg CT or MRI) may take place over an extended period of time (eg seconds or minutes). Data is collected over time and reconstructed to create a final image volume. However, patient motion during an imaging session may cause parts of the data to be corrupted because data acquired while the patient was in a different body position cannot be combined with the remaining data. Therefore, motion during the imaging session greatly complicates image reconstruction. [0003] Current motion correction and motion compensation algorithms are retrospective. For example, motion corrupted data may be rejected during final image reconstruction. However, it is di...
