Problems solved by technology

Therefore, it may be difficult to monitor the amount of each particular fluid produced, and additional patient monitoring may also be required to ensure that fluid does not accumulate within the mask section causing the patient to inhale fluid
[0010] Another disadvantage of known laryngeal masks is that they place pressure on the back of the patient's tongue and epiglottis during insertion and ventilation

Embodiment Construction

[0090]Referring to the drawings, one embodiment of a laryngeal mask 10 includes a housing 12 having an elongated neck portion 14 and a generally teardrop-shaped head portion extending from a first end of the neck portion 14. 16.

[0091] The mask 10 comprises medical grade silicone, which is known to provide the appropriate amount of flexibility and rigidity required in laryngeal masks and other similar airway devices, respectively.

[0092] The head portion 16 includes a sealing face 18 and an opposing face 20 . as in Figure 5 As best shown in , the sealing face 18 and the opposing face 20 are connected by a closure wall 22 extending upwardly from the sealing face 18 to intersect the opposing face 20 .

[0093] as in figure 1 As best shown in , the sealing surface 18 includes a seal 24 for forming a seal around the patient's larynx and has a generally circular opening 26 arranged to be positioned over the patient's larynx opening. The sealing surface 18 is generally tear...

Abstract

A laryngeal mask comprising a housing (12), the housing comprising a neck part (14) and a head part (16) extending from a first end of the neck part. The head part further comprises a sealing face (18) and an opposing face (20); the sealing face and the opposing face being connected by an enclosing wall (22) extending upwardly from the sealing face. The sealing face comprises a peripheral seal (24) for forming a seal around a larynx and has an opening arranged to be positioned over a laryngeal opening. An airway tube (28) is positioned within the housing and extends from a second end of the neck part to the opening in the peripheral seal. The head part comprises a resiliently deformable portion (30), the resiliently deformable portion being a preferentially deformable portion of the head part. The opposing face comprises a protrusion (40).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an airway device for ventilation of a patient, and in particular to a laryngeal mask airway device. Background technique [0002] Traditionally, endotracheal tubes are used to establish an airway in comatose patients. Endotracheal tubes include an elongated catheter with an inflatable cuff or balloon positioned at the distal end of the catheter. In use, the distal end of the endotracheal tube is inserted into the patient's trachea via the patient's mouth. Once positioned correctly, the cuff is inflated, creating a seal with the inner lining of the trachea, which prevents gastric fluid from being drawn into the patient's lungs. The proximal end of the catheter is connected to a ventilation device for providing positive pressure to ventilate the patient's lungs. [0003] However, endotracheal tubes have several disadvantages, including being difficult to position correctly within the patient's airway and requiring exte...
