[0018] System Overview

[0019] One embodiment of the present invention is software called Navigator by TomTom B.V. The Navigator software runs on a Pocket PC-equipped touch-screen (ie, stylus-controlled) PDA device, such as a Compaq iPaq. When the PDA is connected with a GPS receiver, a GPS-based navigation system is provided. This combined PDA and GPS receiver system is designed for use in vehicle navigation systems. The invention can also be implemented on any other configuration of navigation device, such as a device with an integral GPS receiver / computer / display, or a device designed for non-automotive use (e.g., pedestrian use), or in addition to a car Other means of transportation (such as airplanes). The navigation device can use any type of position detection technology and is not limited to GPS; therefore it can use other types of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), such as the European Galileo system. Likewise, the navigation device is not limited to sate...

Abstract

The present invention provides a navigation device programme, makes any function belonging to the center function set connect with a non-overlapping touch input region, the non-overlapping touch input region is so large that is can be activated by fingers reliably. Thus, the invention is capable select/ activate these functions reliably by touching the activated touching input region of fingers which is big enough to touch based on the identifying a set center functions. This particularly benefits for vehicle navigation device, wherein, the center function maybe the function activated by the driver when they are driving.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a navigation device capable of displaying navigation data. The device is used in particular in vehicle navigation systems. Background technique [0002] GPS-based devices are well known and widely used in vehicle navigation systems. Reference may be made to the Navigator series of software from TomTom B.V., the present assignee. The software, when run on a PDA (such as a Compaq iPaq) connected to an external GPS receiver, enables the user to enter departure and destination addresses into the PDA. The software then calculates the best route between the two points and displays instructions on how to navigate that route. By using the positioning information obtained from the GPS receiver, the software can determine the position of the PDA (usually installed on the dashboard of the car) at certain time intervals, and can display the current position of the car on the map, as well as display (and report) ) appropriate navigation...
