Placing the RF antenna in the display enclosure, especially for laptop computers, solves the problems inherent in external RF antennas, but creates other difficulties
For example, by placing the RF antenna in the display enclosure, the size of the antenna is limited due to the space constraints between the enclosure and the display itself, which results in reduced signal integrity due to the proximity of the display hardware to the antenna, and the fact that the antenna cannot will be damaged in

Embodiment Construction

[0009] Figure 1 is a view of a portable electronic device including a main body and a display enclosure in accordance with the present invention. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a portable electronic device comprising a main body 100 and a display enclosure 102 is provided. Within the display enclosure 102 is a display 104 . The main body 100 includes a keyboard 106 and a touch pad 108 . The display enclosure 102 is mechanically connected to the main body 100 by two hinges 110 . When closed, the display enclosure 102 is locked to the main body 100 by two latches 112 that lock into latch receptacles 114 within the main body 100 . Within the main body 100 is a wireless network device 116 for communicating with any available wireless network. The latch 112 is electrically connected to the wireless network device 116 in such a way that it acts as an RF antenna for the wireless network device 16 . Those of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that the wireless...

Abstract

A portable electronic device, including a base mechanically coupled to a display enclosure with a hinge, is built including latches on the display enclosure configured to mechanically lock the display enclosure to the base when the display is closed. The latches are permanently coupled to the display enclosure and are electrically coupled to a wireless network circuit in such a manner as to act as an RF antenna for the wireless network.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of wireless networks, and more particularly to RF antennas for wireless networks. Background technique [0002] As wireless networks become more common, many mobile computing devices incorporate network hardware within the portable computer. Signal integrity is related to network speed, so designers try to provide efficient RF antennas in portable electronic devices in a manner that maximizes signal integrity. Prior art methods include using an external RF antenna electrically connected to the portable device or placing the RF antenna in the display enclosure. External RF antennas require the portable device to provide an external RF antenna connector, taking up valuable space outside the enclosure. Also external RF antennas are vulnerable to damage due to inadvertent bumps or other shocks to them. Placing the RF antenna in the display enclosure, especially for laptop computers, solves the problem...
