Problems solved by technology

Even though apertures can be avoided in the method disclosed by Holmes et al., the fact that hydroentanglement is a relatively expensive process for making nonwoven webs, especially webs intended for use in disposable articles is well known

Embodiment Construction

[0020] It would be desirable to produce a nonwoven web that looks like terry and has the softness and loft of terry-like properties. Terry cloth is a commonly woven material used to make soft absorbent products such as towels. Because of the cost of terry cloth products, they are not suitable for many applications, especially for disposable applications. Therefore, it is desirable to make a nonwoven web that looks like terry from a distance. To have this appearance, it is desirable for the nonwoven web to contain loops.

[0021] Nonwoven webs are generally planar, two-dimensional webs with two surfaces. A web can be a single layer, or can contain more than one layer. The web may comprise more than one layer, such as a spunbond-meltblown-spunbond web (SMS), where the layers are bonded together. The web can be a laminate or composite of different materials. For example, a paper layer can be combined with a meltblown layer. SMS webs can also comprise different materials.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a nonwoven web comprising a plurality of loops. At least one of said loops having a loop circumference length to loop base length ratio that is greater than about 4:1. The loops may also have a base length less than 0.5 cm and a base length less than the maximum width of the loops. The present invention also relates to articles selected from the group consisting of disposable hygiene article and wipes comprising a nonwoven web wherein at least one region of the nonwoven web comprises loops in at least about 10% of the surface area of the nonwoven web. A methodfor producing a nonwoven web comprising a plurality of loops is also included. The method comprises the steps of providing a nonwoven web; providing means for moving fibers of the nonwoven web into the shape of a loop; and moving fibers of the nonwoven web into the shape of a loop.

Description

field of invention [0001] The field of the invention relates to nonwoven webs and products made from the nonwoven webs. More particularly, the present invention relates to obtaining a napped nonwoven web comprising loops. Loop webs can be used in a variety of product applications. Background of the invention [0002] In many product applications, it is desirable for the web to have loft and / or softness. For example, a textile fabric known as terry cloth has loft and softness and is commonly used as bath towels, wipes, bibs, clothing and furniture covering fabrics. Terry cloth is woven on specially manufactured looms such as rapier looms. Terry cloth is characterized by tufts of loops, and the number and density of loops of the tufts can vary. However, terry cloth is relatively expensive due to the relatively complex and expensive looms necessary to manufacture it. The expense of terry cloth makes it commercially unviable for many applications, especially for articles in...
