Embodiment Construction

[0010] Referring to FIG. 1 , an example optical scanner 10 includes a laser 12, a mirror rotator 16, picture Case mirror 18, collector 20, detector 22, video circuit 28, and control circuit 32.

[0011] The laser 12 generates a laser beam.

[0012] The mirror rotator 16 directs the laser beam to picture Mirror 18 and directs light reflected from the barcode label to collector 20.

[0013] Motor 26 rotates mirror rotator 16 .

[0014] Sensor 24 generates a signal for acquiring the position of mirror rotator 16 on its rotational path. Sensor 24 may comprise a Hall effect device for generating a fixed number of pulses each time motor 26 makes one revolution. Sensor 24 sends pulses to control circuit 32 .

[0015] picture Mirror 18 directs the laser beam to barcode label 42 and directs the reflected light to mirror rotator 16 .

[0016] Collector 20 collects the reflected light and directs it to detector 22 .

[0017] The detector 22 converts the reflected light into an el...

Abstract

A barcode scanner with configurable video modes which enhances readability of a wide range of barcode types. The barcode scanner includes a video circuit, and a configuration circuit for altering operating characteristics of the video circuit during a scanning operation for reading a plurality of different types of barcodes.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a barcode scanner with a configurable video mode. Background technique [0002] The video front-end circuitry of the barcode scanner is tuned to respond to the imperfect signal sent from the laser spot through the barcode label. Barcode label characteristics can vary. For example, barcode density or frequency and print quality can vary. Overprinting or background printing, speckling between transitions that produce noise, and print density or contrast affect print quality. [0003] A barcode scanner may have several channels, where the video circuitry in each channel is tuned to optimize reading for any of the above variables. Less expensive barcode scanners with few or only one video channel are not optimized to read different types of barcodes. Barcode scanners with only one video channel have static circuitry that cannot be optimized to read all barcodes that vary widely. [0004] It would be desirable to provid...
