The embodiment of the invention discloses a method for updating media access control (MAC) address, including the following steps: a MAC address list reported by user local equipment according to a preset MAC address list reporting cycle is received; according to the MAC address list, the MAC address ageing timer of the terminal which the user local equipment serves is reset. With the embodiment of the invention invention, the user local equipment reports the MAC address list to an access network gateway according to the MAC address list reporting cycle; the access network gateway, according to the MAC address list, resets the MAC address ageing timer of the terminal which the user local equipment serves; therefore, when the terminal user does not execute empty traffic for a longer time, the MAC address learning table of a terminal user can still be updated, thereby reducing the flow rate of downlink broadcasting message generated due to MAC address ageing and saving empty resource.
