Embodiment Construction

[0016] The presently preferred embodiments of the present disclosure will be best understood with reference to the accompanying drawings. It will be readily understood that the components of the present disclosure, as generally described and shown in the figures herein, can be arranged and designed in widely varying different configurations. Therefore, the following more detailed description, as shown in the accompanying drawings, is not intended to limit the stated scope of the present disclosure, but merely presents the presently preferred embodiments of the present disclosure.

Abstract

Extravascular system packaging systems are adapted to facilitate opening of the package and to facilitate one or more auxiliary uses of the packaging systems. Auxiliary uses include the use of at least a portion of the packaging system as a pre-insertion table and as a temporary disposal receptacle. In its use as a pre-insertion table, the packaging system is adapted to provide a stable temporary storage tool where the extravascular system is readily accessible to the medical practitioner. In its use as a temporary disposal receptacle, the packaging system is adapted to provide a stabilized receptacle adapted to temporarily receive a deployed needle assembly until the needle assembly can be properly disposed of in a sharps container.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to extravascular systems, including packaging components and devices used with catheter components. Generally, the extravascular system is used for fluid communication with the patient's vasculature. For example, catheters are used to inject fluids (such as standard saline solutions, various medications, and total gastrointestinal nutrients) into patients, draw blood from patients, or monitor various parameters of the patient's vasculature. Background technique [0002] A common type of intravenous (IV) catheter is an over-the-needle peripheral IV catheter. As it says literally, the trocar catheter is mounted on a guide needle with a sharp distal end. At least the inner surface of the distal portion of the catheter tightly engages the outer surface of the needle to prevent peelback of the catheter and thus facilitate insertion of the catheter into the blood vessel. The catheter and the guide needle are assembled such...
