Embodiment Construction

[0019] figure 1 and figure 2 One embodiment of a piston 10 for use in a dispensing cartridge is shown. As used herein, the term "cartridge" refers to any cylindrical housing, and the term "piston" refers to any component that is slidably received in the cartridge and forms a seal with the inner wall of the cartridge. Thus, those of ordinary skill in the art will understand that figure 1 The piston 10 shown in is merely exemplary in nature and the seal-forming structure may be incorporated into other piston designs.

[0020] The piston 10 comprises a body 12 having a generally cylindrical configuration with a side wall 14 arranged in a generally axial direction. Sealing lip 16 extends outwardly from side wall 14 and also in a generally axial direction. More specifically, and with reference to figure 2 , the flange portion 20 of the sealing lip 16 protrudes radially outward from the side wall 14 . A first portion 22 and a second portion 24 of the sealing lip 16 then exte...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a piston with a lip seal and a cartridge system using the same. In particular, the invention relates to a piston for use in a dispensing cartridge and a cartridge system comprising the same. The piston may include a body having a generally cylindrical configuration with a sidewall, and a sealing lip extending outwardly from the sidewall. The sealing lip has a first portion sized to have a first flexibility, a second portion sized to have a second flexibility greater than the first flexibility, a sealing edge terminating in the second portion, and a a sealing bead between the first part and the sealing edge of the second part, and the second part is configured to deflect relative to the first part when the piston is inserted into the barrel so that the sealing edge and the sealing bead have contact with the inner wall of the barrel relation. The sealing edge and sealing crimp cooperate to prevent leakage during storage and to prevent leakage during use.

Description

[0001] Cross-References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 077,727, filed July 2, 2008, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to a lip seal for a piston. More specifically, the present invention relates to a piston with a lip seal for use in a dispensing cartridge, and a dispensing system with a cartridge using the piston. Background technique [0004] Fluid cartridges used in adhesive and sealant dispensing systems typically include one or more pistons that form a seal with the inner wall of the axial bore of the cartridge. After the barrel has been initially filled with adhesive / sealant, the piston is positioned near the rear wall of the barrel. To spray the adhesive / sealant through the outlet in the front wall of the barrel, a dispenser such as a caulk gun is attached to the piston and used to advance...
