Embodiment Construction

[0013] Figure 1-3 A pump follower 10 is shown comprising a pressure plate 12 , a perforated member 14 and a mounting ring 16 . The perforated member 14 is firmly attached to the mounting ring 16 by means such as welding. Alternatively, the perforated member and mounting ring may be replaced by a unitary structure comprising, for example, a plate with an outer solid ring portion and a perforated inner region. The perforating member 14 is mounted on the bottom side or surface 20 of the platen 12 and is positioned in a mounting edge or groove 26 ( figure 2 and 3 ). Alternatively, the groove 26 can be eliminated and the perforating member 14 can be fixed to the bottom surface of the platen 12 . The mounting ring 16 is secured to the bottom surface 20 of the platen 12 by threaded fasteners 22 and is located within a groove 26 . Each fastener 22 may comprise any element suitable for securely anchoring the mounting ring 16 to the mounting edge 26 . Alternatively, any other me...

Abstract

The invention provides a low waste pump follower comprising a platen and a perforated member, wherein the platen has a bottom side defining a cavity and the perforated member covers the cavity. The pump follower is driven into a container of viscous material. Material is forced through the perforated member, into the cavity, and pumped to a dispenser. When the pump follower reaches the bottom of the container, it is retracted, and the residual material present in the cavity is retained by the perforated member.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to (pending) US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 243,267, filed September 17, 2009, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference herein in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present application generally relates to a pump follower of the type used to remove viscous material from a container. Background technique [0004] A pump follower used in conjunction with a pump to remove viscous material from a container may generally include a disc or platen coupled to the inlet end of the pump. Such followers are inserted into the open end of a drum, cylinder or other container of highly viscous material. Tacky materials are typically stored in 55 gallon drums. The platen is driven towards the bottom of the drum. As a result, the viscous material is forced into chambers on the underside of the platen, which in turn enters the channel through a pump in the c...
