Apparatus and methods for dispensing fluidic or viscous materials

Mixing and dispensing apparatus and methods for use with, e.g., a multi-component reactive material process is disclosed. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a series of positive displacement pumps adapted for stacked or “piggy-back” mating to a common motive source. At least one of the pumps is supplied by a sealed and collapsible reservoir bag and flexible tubing, thereby allowing removal (and optionally disposal) of one or more complete material pathways within the system. Such a configuration allows for, inter alia, rapid colorant changing with minimal material waste, obviates the use of hazardous solvents, and increases process efficiency and worker productivity. This arrangement also obviates complex metering apparatus common to prior art systems, thereby allowing it to be as small and power / cost efficient as possible.

Combination gravimetric and volumetric dispenser for multiple fluids

A combination gravimetric and volumetric fluid dispenser is disclosed which includes a scale linked to a controller. The controller is linked to a plurality of two stage valves which control the dispensing of large quantities of base materials. The controller is also linked to a plurality of nutating pumps which together with the controller controls the dispensing of smaller quantities of additive materials. The dispensing system disclosed is particularly useful for paints or other liquid formulations where larger quantities of base materials are added and which can be added by weight and whereby precise measurements of the larger base materials is not particularly required. However, the incorporation of nutating pumps and the addition of smaller amounts of additives by volume using the nutating pumps enables precise dispensing of the additives, such as colorants for paint. The larger containers or reservoirs of base material may be disposed at a remote location from the dispensing apparatus. The dispensing apparatus is also preferably designed with a modular configuration as shown and described. For viscous materials, an improved dispensing method is disclosed whereby viscous base material is added to the container first followed by smaller amounts of additives followed by additional dispensing of viscous base materials. By sandwiching the smaller amounts of additives between layers of base materials, an improved mix ability results for viscous materials such as base materials of paints and colorants.

Viscous material dispensing system and method with feedback control

A system for accurately dispensing controlled amounts of viscous material. The system includes a pressurized supply of the viscous material, a dispenser connected with the pressurized supply and a feedback control for ensuring that a discrete dispensed amount corresponds closely to the desired dispensed amount for a particular application. The different methods of feedback control include changing pressure of the pressurized supply after measuring a dispensed amount and comparing the dispensed amount with a stored value representing the desired amount. Another manner of feedback control includes changing an air operating pressure associated with the dispenser. A third type of feedback control includes adjusting the duration that the dispenser is maintained on to dispense the viscous material. Each of these types of feedback control are preferably used in succession, as necessary, to ensure that the desired amount of viscous material is discharged from the dispenser. Methods of controlling an amount of viscous material discharged from a dispenser further include using one or more of the feedback controls described above.

Portable gas powered fluid dispenser

A caulking gun has a tubular chamber to surround sleeve-like rigid tubes and compressible sausage type containers containing viscous materials including sealants, adhesives, caulking, mastics and the like. When rigid tubes are loaded into the chamber, compressed gas is allowed to surround the sleeve and a plunger loaded within the rigid tube to equalize pressure around the outside of the rigid tube. If a sausage type container is loaded into the chamber, a removable plunger is also provided to form a tight seal between the perimeter of the plunger and the inner surface of the chamber. Compressed gas introduced into the chamber preferentially acts on the plunger and an underlying end wall of the sausage to expel the material, without imparting any significant pressure to other parts of the sausage. The caulking gun includes a variable flow rate nozzle which may be removed from the device. The nozzle may be replaced with similar or different nozzle pieces of various shapes and sizes, if desired. Hand operated controls vary the flow rate through the nozzle and control introduction of compressed gas when in use. These features may be incorporated into other portable, hand held dispensing devices powered by other pressurized fluids.
