Problems solved by technology

Specific types of transmissions may not be accurately detected just by scanning the spectrum
For wireless microphones in particular, frequency scanning can be difficult because the magnitude of the accompanying audio tone key signal causes fluctuations in the bandwidth of a particular wireless microphone signal

Embodiment Construction

[0018] Methods and apparatus for detecting the presence of a particular transmission signal in a wireless channel are disclosed that utilize spectral features in the transmission signal to improve detection accuracy. In one example of a narrowband transmission such as a wireless microphone transmission, the effect of the added tone key can be analyzed to be able to determine whether a wireless microphone signal is present in the wireless channel, thereby increasing detection accuracy.

Abstract

Methods and apparatus are described for detecting the presence of a transmitted signal type within a wireless channel in wireless communication systems, such as those systems that include the use of wireless microphones. Detecting the type of transmitted signal includes computing an estimate of the spectral density of the signal on said wireless channel. A first test value derived from the calculated spectral density estimate is compared to a first threshold. If the first test value exceeds a first threshold, a preliminary determination is made regarding the presence of the transmitted signal type. After making an initial determination of the presence of said signal type, by determining that the observed spectral density of a prescribed signal added to said signal on said wireless channel is sufficiently consistent with a model of the spectral density of said prescribed signal Estimates are matched to detect the presence of the signal type.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to methods and apparatus for detecting the presence of transmission signals in wireless channels, and more particularly to spectral detection of specific transmission signal types in wireless channels. Background technique [0002] In certain wireless networks including cognitive radio technology operating according to IEEE standard 802.22, as an example, unlicensed wireless operation is permitted in unused television channels. In order to avoid operating in a channel being used by a licensed wireless device at a given time, user equipment in such a network preferably requires the ability to observe the spectrum and identify channels occupied by licensed users or other users . As examples, note that licensed users may be Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television transmissions, National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) analog television transmissions, or licensed wireless microphone tran...
