Problems solved by technology

This solution potentially has the disadvantages of being more expensive than using an IP link, providing less flexibility or functionality than using an IP link, and requiring additional operations, administration, maintenance and setup to configure and maintain the facility ( OAM&P) complexity
There are several disadvantages to this approach, including: (1) no calls, even "important" calls, get the higher sound benefits of G.711 or other high-quality codecs; (2) during off-peak hours, businesses also to pay for their unused bandwidth; and (3) all calls are treated equally, with no opportunity to change method or capability

Embodiment Construction

[0038] The invention is illustrated below in connection with an exemplary communication system. While well suited for use with, for example, systems using server(s) and / or database(s), the invention is not limited to use with any particular type of communication system or configuration of system elements. Those skilled in the art will recognize that the disclosed techniques may be used in any communication application where it is desirable to manage calls over a communication link with constrained bandwidth.

[0039] Exemplary systems and methods of the present invention are also described in conjunction with analysis software, modules, and associated analysis hardware. However, to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the present invention, the following description omits well-known or otherwise generalized well-known structures, components, and devices, which may be shown in block diagram form.

Abstract

The present invention discloses priority-based, dynamic optimization of utilized bandwidth. Methods, devices, and systems are provided for performing priority-based codec conversions. Such conversions may implemented on calls sharing a link having limited bandwidth and may also be implemented after the call has been established but before the call has been terminated. The mechanisms provided herein maximize per-user call completion / quality and overall utilization of network bandwidth by dynamically adjusting encoding algorithms and transmission characteristics of calls using the constrained link.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to communications, and more particularly to bandwidth management. Background technique [0002] Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a generic term for a family of transport technologies used to deliver voice messages over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms that are frequently encountered as synonyms for VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, Voice over Broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband telephony. [0003] Internet telephony refers to communication services—voice, fax, and other such messaging and / or voice messaging applications—delivered over the Internet rather than the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The basic steps of initiating an Internet phone call include converting an analog voice signal to digital format and converting the signal into Internet Protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet; the process is reversed...
