Disadvantages of existing manual cutting devices include that manual devices are often clumsy and difficult to operate, thereby relying heavily on the skill of the physician and complicating the procedure at an increased risk. In particular, manipulating the cutting blade and advancing the device to fully release the lead is extremely difficult and often results in excessive tissue damage, as well as other complications and / or a more invasive surgical procedure to extract the lead. Laser or diathermy devices are an improvement over existing manual extraction devices in terms of complexity and success of lead extraction, however, such devices are expensive and may not be available to the performing surgeon.
