System for combined transcutaneous blood gas monitoring and vacuum assisted wound closure

A method and apparatus for the transcutaneous monitoring of blood gases generally comprises a blood gas data acquisition device, a vacuum source and a blood gas transducer unit. The blood gas transducer unit is adapted for application to a patient's skin and administration of a local vacuum at the area of patient application. It further comprises an electrochemical blood gas transducer, well known to those of ordinary skill in the art, which is disposed entirely within the local vacuum at the area of patient application. The vacuum source is placed in fluid communication with the blood gas transducer unit, through a hydrophobic membrane filter for safety purposes, in order to induce a condition of hyperperfusion in the locality of the electrochemical blood gas transducer. Under the control of a microcontroller, or equivalent means, the blood gas acquisition device is then utilized to capture a measure of skin surface oxygen or carbon dioxide pressure. The microcontroller can then utilize this measure to arrive at an estimate of arterial partial pressure of oxygen or carbon dioxide, accordingly. Because vacuum induced perfusion produces the requisite condition of hyperperfusion without local heating and, therefore, without acceleration of the local metabolic function, the present invention results in more accurate than previously available estimates of partial pressure blood gas pressures and does so while eliminating a significant risk for injury to the patient.

Method for validating an untrusted native code module

ActiveUS20090282477A1Facilitates safely executingWithout significant risk of unwanted side effectMemory loss protectionError detection/correctionCode moduleControl flow
A system that validates a native code module. During operation, the system receives a native code module comprised of untrusted native program code. The system validates the native code module by: (1) determining that code in the native code module does not include any restricted instructions and / or does not access restricted features of a computing device; and (2) determining that the instructions in the native code module are aligned along byte boundaries such that a specified set of byte boundaries always contain a valid instruction and control flow instructions have valid targets. The system allows successfully-validated native code modules to execute, and rejects native code modules that fail validation. By validating the native code module, the system facilitates safely executing the native code module in the secure runtime environment on the computing device, thereby achieving native code performance for untrusted program binaries without significant risk of unwanted side effects.

System and method for evaluating risk of mortality due to congestive heart failure using physiologic sensors

A congestive heart failure (CHF) mortality risk metric is automatically generated using an implantable medical device and, if it exceeds a predetermined threshold, a warning signal is issued indicating a significant risk of mortality due to CHF, perhaps necessitating more aggressive medical therapy. The CHF mortality risk metric is calculated based on a combination of estimated ventilatory response values and the slope of heart rate reserve as a function of predicted heart rates. Ventilatory response is estimated based on detected values of actual heart rate, arterial oxygen saturation, right ventricular O2, stroke volume, tidal volume, and respiration rate. Heart rate reserve values are derived from the actual heart rate along with patient age and rest heart rate. The predicted heart rates, which represent the heart rates the patient would achieve if healthy, are derived from activity sensor signals. The CHF mortality risk metric is then calculated as a ratio of ventilatory response and the slope of the heart rate reserve. If the CHF mortality risk metric exceeds a critical threshold value, such as 90, the warning signal is generated. Also described herein are various techniques for estimating ventilatory response.

Prediction of shallow drilling hazards using seismic refraction data

Shallow drilling hazards (44), such as karsts, caves, voids and unconsolidated discontinuities, that can pose significant risks to exploration and development well drilling operations are detected employing seismic refraction data on which a series of attribute analyses are performed, the resulting data being further processed to provide a three-dimensional visualization. Refracted wave raypaths (40, 46, 48) are highly distorted by encountering a karst feature with the occurrence of backscattering absorption. The resultant energy recorded at the surface receivers (52) is significantly reduced as compared to refracted waves recorded by other receivers (50) where no karsting is present. Multiple refractors are subjected to a relatively simple and rapid processing using commercially available software to track these differences and to map them in the near surface to improve the siting of wells and to alert drilling engineers and crews to the possibility of encountering the hazard.

Modified laryngoscope blade to reduce dental injuries during intubation

The present invention relates to the field of medical devices used in the procedures of orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation. Oral or nasal endotracheal intubation procedures are commonly employed to secure a controlled airway and to deliver inhalant oxygen, anesthetic gases, and other therapeutic agents into the trachea and lungs of human and veterinary patients. Such intubation procedures carry a significant risk of dental injury resulting from contact between the laryngoscope blade used for visualization during intubation. The present invention provides an apparatus to reduce dental injury including a modified laryngoscope blade and a disposable insert which is designed to be received and retained in a single step by the modified laryngoscope blade. The disposable insert may be quickly secured by the user, and reduces both direct pressure and shear forces on the maxillary incisor teeth when the laryngoscope blade is placed in a patient's mouth during intubation.

Cockpit and Crew Rest Air Quality Sensor

Disclosed is an area sensor for air quality in the cockpit, crew rest or other area of an aircraft. Noxious fumes, fuel vapors, carbon monoxide and other vapors can cause significant risks to the flight crew of an aircraft. Fumes may cause drowsiness, inattentiveness or confusion to the pilot of an aircraft placing all persons on board an aircraft in danger. There exists a need to monitor and warn the cabin crew of such an event so that measures can be taken, such as donning an oxygen mask, to mitigate the fumes. Many of the vapors encountered that can cause this issue are colorless and / or odorless and therefore not always detected by the flight crew especially if they are in sufficient quantities and exposure is long enough to compromise the pilots cognitive skills.
