An embodiment of the invention provides a document number generating method and a document number generating system. The method includes the steps: determining business numbers according to received system instructions; selecting unused serial numbers as sequence numbers from serial numbers corresponding to the business numbers; determining designated information at the tail of document numbers; generating check bits by means of computing according to the business numbers, the sequence numbers and the designated information; and assembling the business numbers, the sequence numbers, the check bits and the designated information according to preset assembly rules to generate the document numbers. By the aid of the data processing method, the document numbers including the designated information can be obtained by means of computing once, response time for generating the needed document numbers is strictly controlled, and system overhead is effectively controlled.
