The method comprises: obtaining attribute values of a variable barcode from analysis of a page file; generating the image width value of the barcode image according to the attribute values and the current variable barcode; setting width of the area displaying the barcode image to be the generated width value; and outputting the barcode image in the area having the width in the page formed by the page file. The width of the barcode image is generated via the analyzed attribute values and the current variable barcode, and the area width is set according to the generated width of the barcode image, thereby enabling the barcode image to be fully displayed in the area without the presence of blank area. The problem that after a fixed size default area is formed on the page via a default variable barcode, the default area is inconsistent with the width of the barcode image required to be displayed is prevented.
