Embodiment Construction

[0107] exist figure 1 One embodiment of an nCPAP system 20 incorporating a nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) device 22 in accordance with the principles of the present invention is shown in block diagram form in FIG. In summary, nCPAP system 20 is adapted to provide CPAP therapy to patient 24 and includes nCPAP device 22 and source 26 of pressurized gas. Optionally, nCPAP system 20 may also include a pressure monitor 28 . nCPAP device 22 is described in more detail below and generally includes a generator body 30 and a patient interface 32 . Optionally, an ambient air duct 34 may also be provided. Generator body 30 is in fluid communication with patient interface 32 adapted to establish fluid communication with the nasal airway of patient 24 and optionally ambient air tubing 34 . Pressurized gas source 26 provides a continuous gas flow (eg, air and / or oxygen, etc.) to generator body 30 . Pressure monitor 28 , if provided, is also in fluid communication with...

Abstract

An nCPAP device for helping patients breathe, the device includes a generator body formed with an inlet, a cavity, a first flow path and a second flow path. The chamber guides the pressurized gas from the inlet into the flow path. The flow paths all include: a first nozzle, a second nozzle, a deflector, and an exhaust channel. The nozzle injects the jet into the deflector in the direction of the patient side. In some embodiments, the flow director is formed with a first tapered wall portion directing inspiratory gases towards the patient, and a second tapered wall portion directing exhaled gases towards the exhaust passage. This generator body reduces the actuation pressure required to achieve target CPAP levels and reduces overall imposed WOB compared to conventional designs.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to devices and methods for generating and delivering continuous positive airway pressure therapy or other non-invasive breathing assistance to a patient such as an infant. More specifically, the present invention relates to nasal continuous positive airway pressure systems, devices and methods that drive variable flow of pressure with reduced pressure requirements and improved work of breathing. Background technique [0002] Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy has been used for many years to treat patients experiencing dyspnea and / or insufficiency. Additionally, CPAP therapy can advantageously help patients with underdeveloped lungs (especially infants, especially premature or newborn infants) by preventing the lungs from collapsing during exhalation and helping the lungs expand during inhalation. [0003] In summary, CPAP therapy continuously delivers positive pressure to the lungs of a spontaneo...
