Abstract

In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the content of a data message to be sent on the control channel is determined, and a selection is made between encrypting or not encrypting the data message based on the determined content. For example, if it is determined from the content that the data message is an SMS message, encryption is selected and the control channel is SACCH; otherwise no encryption is selected. Such a determination may be made by examining the service access point identifier corresponding to the data block comprising said data message. Determining whether a data message within a data block is encrypted or unencrypted is determined using only information within the data block received over the control channel, and the received data message is processed in accordance with the determination. In another embodiment, the FACCH is selected for sending the message if the message is an SMS, and encryption is selected for all data blocks sent on the FACCH.
