Embodiment Construction

[0080] In the figures there is shown a safety gate according to an embodiment of the invention, such as may be used to selectively prevent young children, such as toddlers, from passing stairs (hence also called a stair gate).

[0081] The safety door 1 comprises a first fixed part 2 and a second fixed part 4 and a pivot part 3 . The pivot part 3 is pivotally mounted on the first fixed part 2 and is engageable with the second fixed part 4 via a locking mechanism 5 . The first fixing part 2 and the second fixing part 4 can generally be fixed to the wall on either side of the opening through which passage is to be blocked.

[0082] The safety gate has a closed position (as shown in the attached figure 1 , 2 and 7) and the open position (as shown in the attached Figure 5 , 6 and 8). In the closed position, the pivot member 3 prevents the passage between the first fixed part 2 and the second fixed part 4; It passes between the second fixing part 4.

Abstract

A safety gate, typically used to used to prevent children access to stairs, comprising: a first fixed part 2 and second fixed part 4 both arranged to be fixed to a wall and a pivoting part 3 pivotally mounted to the first fixed part and comprising a pivot-engaging member 7 mounted to the first fixed part, a fixed part engaging member 10 which engages the second fixed part in the closed position and a plurality of releasable and reconnectable spacer members 8 9 which space the fixed part engaging member from the pivot-engaging member. The gate may have a variety of spacer members depending on the width of gate required. Each spacer or width member 8 9 may have an engagement mechanism 11 comprising a spring loaded tongue (39 Fig 10) which is compressed when the mechanism is inserted into bore (12 Fig 10) and engages ledge (40 Fig 10) to prevent removal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to safety doors, in particular to a kit for forming a safety door and a method of changing width and assembling a safety door. Background technique [0002] Safety gates are well known; generally, they comprise a pivot member held between two fixed parts for pivoting on the first of the two fixed parts. The two fixing parts are fastened against the walls on either side of the opening. The pivot member may prevent passage between the fixed parts when it is pivoted to a closed position between the fixed parts, or allow passage between the fixed parts when it is pivoted away from a second of the fixed parts. Typically, security gates are sized to prevent the passage of children, usually toddlers (from about 1 to 3 years of age onwards). [0003] In particular, such safety gates are often used to prevent access to stairs, either at the top of the stairs to prevent children from falling down the stairs, or at the bottom to pr...
