Abstract
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition having the appropriate balance in relation to at least one or at least two characteristics from among characteristics such as the following: a high nematic phase upper-limit temperature; a low nematic phase lower-limit temperature; low viscosity; appropriate optical anisotropy; large dielectric anisotropy; large relative permittivity; high stability with respect to ultraviolet rays or heat; and a large elastic constant. A further purpose is to provide an active matrix element that has: a short response time; a large voltage retention rate; a low threshold voltage; a large contrast ratio; a large negative DC luminance relaxation time constant; and a long life. Provided are the following: a liquid crystal composition that has positive dielectric anisotropy, that contains, as an additive component, a compound which contributes to high-stability with respect to heat or ultraviolet rays, and that contains, as a first component, a prescribed compound having low viscosity; and a liquid crystal display element that contains the composition. The composition may contain the following: a prescribed compound which serves as a second component and has large positive dielectric anisotropy; a prescribed compound which serves as a third component and which has a high upper-limit temperature or low viscosity; or a prescribed compound which serves as a fourth component and which has negative dielectric anisotropy.
Description
technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition, a liquid crystal display element containing the composition, and the like. In particular, it relates to a liquid crystal composition with a positive dielectric constant anisotropy, and the liquid crystal composition containing the composition and having twisted nematic (twistednematic, TN), optically compensated bend (optically compensated bend, OCB), in-plane switching (in -plane switching (IPS), fringe field switching (Fringe Field switching, FFS) or field-induced photo-reactive alignment (field-induced photo-reactive alignment, FPA) mode active matrix (active matrix, AM) element. Background technique [0002] In liquid crystal display elements, the classification based on the operation mode of liquid crystal molecules is phase change (phase change, PC), twisted nematic (twisted nematic, TN), super twisted nematic (super twisted nematic, STN), electronically controlled birefringence ( El...
