Provided are the following: a liquid crystal composition that has positive dielectric anisotropy, that contains, as an additive component, a compound which contributes to high-stability with respect to heat or ultraviolet rays, and that contains, as a first component, a prescribed compound having low viscosity; and a liquid crystal display element that contains the composition. The composition may contain the following: a prescribed compound which serves as a second component and has large positive dielectric anisotropy; a prescribed compound which serves as a third component and which has a high upper-limit temperature or low viscosity; or a prescribed compound which serves as a fourth component and which has negative dielectric anisotropy.
